If I recall correctly, the onboard charger will only charge to 80% of capacity. If you are happy to only recharge to 80% then it is fine to hookup to the ehu to recharge.If you want to fully recharge, then you will need to connect to a separate charger. You don't necessarily need to remove the battery though. If you disconnect the battery terminals, you could plug a separate charger into the van with ehu connected and clip it onto the battery. (not in that order, always connect the battery to the charger before plugging the charger in)
