I work in the New Forest (can't afford to live there though), and we frequently go there for a weekend. In the past I have had to work weekends, so we have pitched up, and OH and the kids have spent the day out enjoying themselves while I have been working.
As others have said, for weekend look for an hour or so travel in most cases, like a CS only about 15 miles away but can take 60 mins on a Friday night!
For longer breaks tend to go further as don't mind using best part of a day to get there.

Too right tony.I know only too well the traffic around Birmingham on a mad Friday night!!!

To answer this topic, imagine that it is possible right now to halve the distance between you and Jeremy Clarkson, keep doing that and you will find your answer soon enough...
The closest I've stayed for a weekend so far is a 40 minute drive away from home. There's a CC site only 15 minutes away but that's just too close. It's not far from where I used to work and I passed the road down to it every day, so to stay there just wouldn't feel like a break.

I think it makes real sense to do your first trip of the season near home, then if there any problems or you have left somert behind you can sort it much more easily.
When we camped in a tent, I never thought to stay near home. But we didn't really go away for weekends either - it was too much hassle pitching the tent for 2 nights then having to unpack the trailer when we got home. And we both worked shifts so didn't get many weekends off together anyway.
We are new caravaners now and also I'm now a desk jockey so have weekends off We took our van out for the first time a couple of weekends ago to try everything out and make sure it all worked. We chose a campsite 25 miles from home. If anything was wrong we were near enough to the dealer where we bought it from.
We had a great time. And are planning plenty more weekend breaks near to home. Mind you I don't finish work til 5.15pm and have to battle home thru rush hour traffic so we need somewhere close by (less than an hour I suppose) to make the most of it.
For my first trip out in my "new" 40 year old caravan which I hope will be at Easter, I'm going to a CL that I can see from the top of my garden!!!! Want to be close to home in case I have a major problem - never had a caravan before so I thought I'd start off very slowly and carefully!!!
