I'm looking for a used caravan. Most private sellers seem to sell them with the full kit inc awnings. Yet the dealers that I've seen, appear only to sell used caravans without the kit.
Do they just want to get you to buy a new awning ? is it too risky/too much hassle for them to give you old awning ?
The dealers take them out of the caravans and sell them separately as secondhand awnings.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

We bought our awning secondhand when we bought our van and the man in the shop told me that he didn't want to buy or trade in our old awning which didnt fit the new van (the old one had be to be scrapped) as he had to chuck loads into a skip a couple of weeks before!!! What a waste! He could have probably sold them all off dead cheap, someone would have had a bargain and he would have made a bit of cash from it.
we've never given our awning with the caravan when trading in on a couple of occasions it's fitted the new van we've also been and traded the awning in at an awning shop and sold privately.

We bargained for an awning when we bought our van from the dealers ie "throw in a decent secondhand awning and its a deal". I think he was glad to get rid of one to be honest, we had four we could choose from and we gave them a good look over for tears etc before we decided. He also gave us a spare awning skirt which fitted in with our porch awning (we use that for weekends) Worth a try if theyre only chucking them in skips!
Perhaps you could cut out the Dealer and his cut and buy your second hand awning direct from the original owners. I have had good bargains from Preloved
I think most people trading their van in to a dealer, would sell any surplus awnings or equipment privately, in order to recoup some money on them.
I know that the dealer we use do take a few awnings in with trade-ins, but only the premium brands that are in excellent condition. That's how I bought our Isabella Annex. I asked our dealer if they had any used ones and they had two at the time.
We've got a trade-in agreed at the moment and whilst we discussed in some detail whether our Isabella awnings would fit the new van, the dealer never once suggested that they take the awning in as part of the deal - so I conclude that its not something that they very often get involved with.
I'm guessing that the effort of checking the condition and completeness of used awnings, storing them, showing them to potential buyers and helping buyers with any after-sale queries (or complaints) they may have probably makes them more trouble than they are worth.
We recently purchased our first caravan via a private sale came with a full size awning that had only been used twice, then last week we collected a porch awning from an elderly gentleman and his wife who have recenctly given up caravanning, they advertised the porch awning on FREECYCLE, so it cost us nothing.
When we got home we unpacked it and its immaculate, its the same colours as the awning that came with the caravan but the poles are aluminimum whereas the large awning has steele poles.
We think we have been lucky and had bargains with both awnings especially when we checked the makes and sizes and saw what prices they would have cost us new.
Our dealer always says its up to us whether or not we leave the awning in when we PX. He won't give us any mioney for it and he won't charge the buyer for it. Having seen vans there with awnings he won't give any guarantee as to their condition.
However as the awning is getting on a bit by the time we trade in, the last was 7 years old, I just leave it in. I probably won't get much 2nd hand and it may save the buyer a few quid at the time they most need it buying the van.

Many Thanks for all you posts - which are of great help.
I would like to buy a second caravan privately but the amount of rogues and scams on ebay etc is a real concern: It's buyer be VERY AWARE !
You'll definitely get a LOT more for your cash privately but obviously no warranty, if you're careful you'll be fine, same as with a car but for some reason people seem so much more wary with buying a 'van.
When we bought our caravan from Dyce caravans last year we had the choice of a Senator or the Pageant which we bought, the Senator had an awaning in it which they said we could have for free but we were told there was no gaurantee with it. It didnt make us buy it though and we chose the Pageant. We only use a porch awning and this we bought brand new for our last caravan and luckily it fitted the new caravan.
