For the first time last week I took a digital TV in the van not knowing how the bog-standard roof mounted Maxview Status aerial would deal with digital TV reception. On site (a CL in rural Bedfordshire) I first tried auto-tuning analogue channels with the usual unsatisfactory result - varying reception, or none, across the five channels. However, doing the same with digital was a total success. Every possible channel was available - which is better than at home (I need to upgrade a very old aerial).

What is everybody's experiences around the country? Can I expect this result most places?

That's good news...we have been to two "digital only" sites and both times our £12 Argos box has worked brilliantly. We have a new "steerable" aeriel but it's good to know the old "flying saucer" ones work with digital...they never did with analogue!

My free to air satellite set up is now almost redundant in the UK....less weight to carry....so no bad thing.

Our local transmitter is a relay transmitter and only broadcasts half the channels found on main transmitters.  Bear this in mind, any system is only as good as the local signal and in some parts of the country not all channels are available, unlike satellite.

My experience with digital using a mast mounted digital friendly aerial is variable. Unlike analogue you either get the full lot available and a decent picture, or nothing at all. It's the usual story with vanning: trees, remote locations and sparse population mean that often there is poor reception.

Of course when they turn the analogue off they will boost the digital signal but I suspect it won't be that diffrent  overall in that where we got a good signal before it will be good in the future and where there was nowt there will still be. They aren't after all moving the transmitters!

We have been quite impressed with digital via the Status aerial (both the round and the newer version) both here and abroad. I should add that was with a TV with a built in digital tuner.

we use the status ariel but if thats crap we use an ariel on the side of the van, we put a holder on the van from our dealers and the ariel is high up. We always use a digibox. In our area analouge was cut off first in the country so tuning in the digibox is 2nd nature to us. It does depend where you are in the country as to how many channels you get!!

Very interesting that you had success abroad. Where exactly was this and which channels did you receive?

Perhaps I should have clarified that the were local channels depending on what country we are in, not UK ones! If we are in a situation where we can't use the satellite we tune into local TV so that we can watch mainly the Grand Prixs. Unlike analogue there appears to be a common European digital system.

So no problems with compatibity then as was the case with analogue/PAL, etc.

I have tried searching for freeview channels occasionally on site and never yet got anything. Admitedly this is on a set top aerial rather than a status aerial. I have never had a problem getting a reception on a satellite.

Further research reveals the following somewhat techie explanation about using a UK DTV abroad:

The UK uses the European DVB-T transmission system, adopting the 2k COFDM modulation system. Most other countries in Europe have elected to use different transmission modes, commonly using the 8k COFDM modulation system. To work out whether a UK Freeview box will work in other European countries, you need to check format and frequency range that your target country uses, then look at the specs of the set-top box to see if it uses the right COFDM system and frequency range (a few receivers seem to have a chipset that supports both 2k/8k for use in Europe and the UK).
UK format:
UK frequency range: 470MHz-860MHz (UHF), (47MHz-230MHz VHF)
UK coding system: MPEG-2
UK COFDM system: 2k

Whilst looking at a Q&A forum re DTV abroad I found a hilarious answer to the question: using a portable dvd player which also has freeview tv, would I be able to watch English channels when in France or Spain? Answer: yes, but you'd need to record the programmes first before you leave.

Well I thought it was funny...

Hi

Obviously reception varies around the country but in Somerset we get good reception with loft aerials (through concrete roof tiles).

And that's before they turn the signal up and using an old fashioned non digital aerial.

We have had fantastic digital reception with our vans roof top 'flying saucer' status-look-a-likey aerial. But then we have also had no reception at all! That is why we now carry a 60cm oval satalite dish and a freesat (if that is what it is called) reciever. Now we get great recception everywhere we go! Strangely the channel called Dave can only be recieved through the aerial (not via freesat) so we do miss the programmes on this channel sometimes grrr! Why if it is available free via freeview through an aerial, it is not available through freesat! Madness in my opinion, and typical of us Brits - we develop a better more reliable system then make it laughable by only supporting some of the free tv channels on it. Then, just to make life really tricky, we publish tv listings in magazines that only list some of the channels, usually some freesat and some freeview, but never all of either lol! As a consequence we use the aerial nad the satallite dish, but we find we have much better success rate with the dish - we just wished all free channels were available on it

Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!
