I want to replace the Truma Therme in my Hobby 540UK Touring Caravan so I can occaisionally visit sites without EHU and be reasonably self sufficient in hot water.

I appear to have a choice of :-

Truma Ultrastore 10L/14L GAS & ELEC

Propex Malaga 3E 13.5L GAS & ELEC

Henry GE 9L GAS & ELECTRIC

Both Malaga and Ultrastore will be a tight fit under front seat box (420mm wide *335 high * caravan width ) and will require re routing cables, water pipe & warm air hose & moving trailer junction box on nearside (yes n/s it's a German caravan).

Has anyone installed/used a Henry GE (based upon modified Carver 2)?

I was going to fit Propex Malaga but it is heavy and would be a tight fit and I do not have many other suitable locations for it although 13.5L hot water sounds good and they seem to be reliable!

The Henry GE is smaller, lighter (only 9L) and would leave sufficient room but do not know of anyone who has fitted one so do not know if they are reliable and well supported although most parts seemCarver compatible except burner module.

What do you recommend considering I would like to keep weight down.

Having studied water heaters for our caravan we went for the Propex one as it was about the same price as the Henry but a better capacity - the Truma lost out due to cost alone, I don't think there is much difference in the height between a Henry and a Propex, the Propex is wider but not so deep

Malaga if at all possible especially as it's just been fully updated, the cheaper ones are possibly old stock though?
You can mount the unit on a thin board with spacers, this leaves space under for pipes and wiring to pass.

There's a guy on ebay selling brand new Truma's at £300 which makes it well worth considering

No comment on the Henry, perhaps a good second hand Cascade though if that's the way you want to go?

Thanks guys, was going round in circles trying to decide Henry/Carver, Malaga, Uĝltrastore.

Price is obviously a consideration however space here is my real issue and once I cut a hole in side of my van it's a bit difficult to go back. I want a reliable unit but have other considerations too.

The henry/cascade appeals because it is a narrow unit which leaves enough room for cables & warm air pipe down either side. It could be raised on 50mm on a plinth to clear cables passing underneath next to wall unless I was able to route them down side and round rear. 9L water would probably be just enough for a shower and an improvement from Truma Therme. At 14.68Kg when full it's lightest unit here. Buying a NEW Henry appeared to be my best solution however I don't know if Henry is good quality or well supported down the line.

The Malaga 3E was my first choice, not much more expensive than Henry/Carver and with 13.5L of hot water capacity. It's heaviest at 22.8Kg when full would be a tight fit. I think I'll find/make a cardboard box and see if there's enough space to route cables & pipe around side and rear.

10L Truma Ultrastore would fit but not much room to route cables and warm air pipe down side with 350mm deep and gas connections at back. 260mm Height would allow me to raise it slightly to let cables/pipes pass underneath. Weight at 16.7Kg when full is in between Carver and Malaga.

To further complicate matters I have a silhouette lamp on bottom lower LHS corner where flue would exit and this location is near (450mm) front edge of caravan but not directly under an opening window (450mm fwd of and 700mm below bottom window edge).

Just to muddy the waters a bit ---- I believe Whale now also now have a water heater on the market.

Whale sounds very good too but I have only 420 wide and 335 height, length is not really a problem. Within this dimension I also have to route cables, water pipes & warm air pipe down the side so it leaves 420 - 385 = 35mm.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way and should try to site it elsewhere it's just that pipes, 230 junction box and drain cocks through floor are all there when I remove truma therme.

Truma Ultrastore   10L/14L GAS & ELEC (350*350*260) 16.7Kg Full         £340/£400

Propex Malaga 3E   13.5L    GAS & ELEC   (325*250*520)   22.8Kg Full       £340

Henry GE     9L    GAS & ELECTRIC     ( 212*236*550)    14.68Kg Full    £275

Whale WH1301 13L  GAS & ELECTRIC (385*470*271)     21.5Kg Full    £450

Wish I knew someone else with similar caravan as all Hobby 540UK Caravans are fitted with truma therme unless upgraded. Some of them must have fitted a gas water heater.

Once I've bought the water heater & cut the hole there's no going back!

Hi

I bought Propex Malaga 3E and fitted it in my caravan in March 2009.
So far I'm quite impressed especially as it is pretty similar to the new (more expensive) Whale (now I've seen both) without the Low/High output on 230V AC.
Plenty of hot water and it heats quite quickly on either or both together.

Fitting was relatively easy once I'd measured a few times to make sure. I placed mine on a piece of plywood board (like the whale) and had small battens underneath in order to pass over cables and pipes.

I have some photos of install & documented main issues if anyone is planning install.

Similar price to 10L Truma, but more compact, similar boiler to Whale but cheaper. Larger capacity than Carver & more efficient.

Since my earlier post I have now had occasion to use the Malaga I bought both on gas and electric (but not yet both together) and have also found it to be very impressive.

Anyone else thinking of changing should really put this heater on the top of their list

Agree with you there Rune, got the Whale version in my van and have found it spot on, would recommend Propex/Whale to anyone

Direct replacement for the Truma and using a neat adaptor plate for the Carver
