Hi,

After many years camping we are considering upgrading to our first caravan. We are a family of five and have spent the day at local dealers looking at whats available. We've found a nice looking 1999 model Sterling Cadiz 5 berth in what looks like immaculate condition. Would this be a suitable first van? and are they considered to be reasonable quality?

Any advice is much appreciated

Is the bunk over the rear double bed big enough for the kids? Great layout and Sterlings are nice vans.

Don't know the van but price & warranty must be a big factor I think for your first van. Also is it a reputable dealer that would have checked it for damp. As you have spent the day at the dealers no doubt you have looked at a number of vans and it is a layout that you like.

A 5 berth must be quite a big van. Have you checked that it is within the capabilities of your towing vehicle?

Thanks for your replies, the dealer checked our car so towing shouldn't be a problem.

The vans for sale a a big dealer, is it 'normal' practice to offer below asking price for a cash sale?

Got to be worth a try, but you may get better value in having some freebie equipment thrown in, as you will need a lot of kit.

Never pay the asking price at a dealer, be cheeky they can only say no, also try and get some extras off them anything from a hook up cable upto an awning. If you don't ask you don't get, Sterlings are nice vans too.

I would go well below the asking price initially - 15 - 20%. When you are getting close to a deal then ask what freebies he is going to throw in to the deal. You can always go up and he can always go down.

I agree ask for discount, if they refuse look sullen and tell them it's your first van and......you have ...........oh so much to buy, could they throw in som extras.

I started by asking them for their best price. Then asked for extras and finally said a price I would go to for it all. I think if you do it with a smile and show that if the price is right you will buy it then and there.

I would check that your car is ok to tow vehicle - I wouldn't just take their word for it - there are some links on this site and I'm sure others can give you some advice. Good luck we are thinking of doing the same - have done for last 2 yrs just bit worried about towing!

Sterlin vans are solid but heavey, be sure to check the 85% rule. dealers love 1st time buyers so be sure to get the best deal + extras, lead waste and water container, good luck and happy caravaning you and youre family are going to love it.
