As far as I can see, caravan movers all can engage both wheels from one side of the caravan and fall into 3 catagories.

1. Winder
Those needing a winder to move the the rollers onto the wheel such as the Royal & Riviera and Ego.

2. Cam
Those operated by levering a cam such as Purpleline Enduro Series II & Towsure Movemaster, Powrtouch and Rhyno.

3. Electrical
The more expensive versions use a motor to operate the rollers.

I know these are many copmanies on the market and I haven't tried to list them all.

I have read lots of posts from people saying how good their product is and from what I can see they all seem to do the job.

My question relates to chosing between cam or winder system types.

Which of these types is best? I gather that if a wheel is slipping it is possible to apply additional force with the windertypes , but can this be done with the cam systems ? Or doesn't this situation occur with cam operated types.

If you have experience of either type your comments would be appreciated and will help me decide what to purchase.

We've only had Powertouch movers wit manual engagement so far & they've been very good. I have to say I expeted the van to move a little quicker but Powertouch has always got our vans off the road, up into the drive & along to the hitch post with no problems. They've also had enough power to move the vans up onto a sloping pitch we use on a particular site we go to.

We've never had cause to put their warranty to the test but I've never read a bad report about the customer support & as our dealer is within walking distance we stick to the products they offer.

We have a Reich which came with a manual winder which worked fine, you can upgrade it to be able a) To wind from either side (handy if it is tight on one side) or b) Make it electrical so it does all the work for you. We went for b and I have to say it works really well, effortless!

We have the powrtouch with the cross bar actuation. This means we can put it on the wheel from one side only but it can be either side. It has an extending socket wrench to do it and is quite hard to move. It is held on the wheels by a strong spring which I don't think will ever let the rollers slip.

I did'nt think we'd need the cross bar actuatioon but the dealer fitted it. I must say it's a great help as it saves walking round the other side each time. It is hard enough to remember to isolate the mover and wind the rollers off the wheels without having to do both sides.

Don't forget, as you get too old to move the thing, the memory also goes.

With the winder system, you can apply more pressure as you say, however the downside is if you venture into the red indicator then you are applying more pressure to the tyres and putting the electroincs under extra load which they are not designed for.

The Cam system can be harder to engage to the tyres and if they have been set during fitting to the correct space and they should not slip.  However, if you are asking the mover to perform a task like operating on an uphill muddy field or up the side of a mountain then you will have issues.

I think with the cam system there is less to go wrong, but you need to practice enaging the rollers as there is a knack to it.
