We have bought a caravan and did not realise that there should be any registration documents (first time buyers) we spoke to CRIS before we bought and they said it was not registered with them as stolen so now we need to get replacement registration documents - how do we go about it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome.

It is CRIS themselves that produce these Registration Documents. Call them and ask them how to get a new one :

Thanks for the advice. The caravan purchase was in Portugal and still is in Portugal but we want to be able to bring it back over to the UK - does this make a difference?

Is it a caravan made in UK and later shipped to Portugal?  If so, I wonder why it was not initially registered with CRiS.  But, if the caravan was shipped new to Portugal there would be little need to register with CRiS (IMHO) or to report a stolen caravan to CRiS.  CRiS is UK’s official database of caravans and their owners and as far as I am aware doesn't cover other countries.  Do other countries have similar database?  Are there international links between those databases?  Check the Portugese database?

If is is not a UK van, it might be worth checking with the organisation which deals with caravan registration for that particular country.

With regard to importing a caravan from Portugal to the UK.  I would contact Customs & Excise and ask.  Synacism tells me that there will probably be paperwork involved, and probably a government department somewhere that will require money, for the privilege.

Please remember,  I do not know the answers to these questions, but they are just the sort of questions I would ask myself if i were in your position.

Best of luck and hope it all works out fine.

Is the caravan originally from The UK & originally reg. with CRIS or was it supplied new in Portugal. If Portugal has a caravan registration system has it been deregistered by previous owner?

For towing back to UK, simply put your no. plate on't back & tow home. You need a reciept from the seller in Portugal as proof of ownership & you might need papers to state it has been de reg. in Portugal if it was ever registered there. This is in case you are stopped on't way home or at UK port of entry but otherwise there is nowt to declare & no customs paperwork as this is all EU.
