Get to a certain age, and like most of us, problems will arise. Damp at the age of 13 may not be uncommon and may be a fight to keep it at bay. Back to basics I suppose
When leaving the van over winter, open all of the cupboards and storage places in the caravan, including the fridge and freezer if you have one. This will ensure that air circulates through the whole caravan as that circulation will help to prevent damp and ensure that the air does not get stale. So, covering may not assist such vital circulation. A breathable cover which allows moisture to escape should be the preferred option.
ensure that all vents/windows are closed and locked, to avoid the weather getting in. Air circulation is important to ensure that damp does not set in, so do not cover vents.
Place "dampbusters" around the van or maybe place dehumidifiers in the caravan to combat damp.
Take all furnishings out so that, if damp returns, they are not spoilt.
If the awning rails have not been rebedded during the life of your van, then perhaps your repairer to give you a quote on doing that job. Check other trim strips, if these have not been checked over the years, and apply frsh mastic sealant.
Check around road lamp fittings as this is often an entry point for water. Is there evidence of rust?
You may like to consider damp proofing/oversealing the entire van and weigh the cost against a new van.
