Hi Folks

I'm sorry to keep on about this motor mover issue but....

The motor mover was fitted yesterday by a P/T fitter. Unfortunately as a I posted yesterday the 'van battery was u/s, despite me having had it off to charge it. That meant, unfortunately I could not get a demo from the fitter.

I have tonight fitted a replacement battery but it was by then too dark to test the mover. I did, however, have the opportunity to have a closer look at the installation.

I am, however, a little worried about how the electronic box has been fitted. We had cleared the front bed box ready for it to be fitted on the floor in there, as it suggests in the manual. However the I have just discovered the fitter has instead fitted it vertically on the wall immediately above the inside of the battery box and behind the 2 drawers over the heater. The cables have been left hanging in loops secured by plastic cable ties. The cables are not secured in any way. I cannot see the lights on the electronic box without removing the drawers. I am not sure where the umbilical cord plugs into the box so I am not sure if it is accessible if needed, if I have a problem with wireless operation of the remote.

The mains lead to the battery has what I think is a fuse carrier which looks as though it should be scresed to a surface but that is hanging loose on the cable inside the battery box. There are no rubber grommets on the holes where the cables access the battery box, correction there ia split grommet hanging on the wire inside the void below the electronic box.

Should I be concerned or am I being over fussy.

In addition could someone advise me about the positions of the red plastic isolating key in the battery box for operation.

Advice from other P/T owners would be appreciated.

Tim

i am a electrical engineer and i fit a enduro on my own caravan and by the sounds of it he has gone for the easy option if it was me i would get him back and get him to put it where you want it because you have to remember one thing YOU  paid for it , as far as the cables not supported in time they will pull off the terminals it may not be for months but one thing you can bet on it will be when you are in the middle of something

Thanks Sparky

I appreciate your reply.

I too think it looks like the easy "option".

I hope to be able to try the mover and see if it works okay tomorrow.

I intend to phone Powrtouch tomorrow to express my concerns.

I thought the experience of other P/T users would be useful "evidence" when phoning P/T technical department.

Any other P/T users comments would be MUCH APPRECIATED
Thanks

The electronic box has been fitted behind the 2 drawers over the heater.

Is this a place that will get hot when the heater is on. heat will cause damage to the the controller

The cables have been left hanging in loops secured by plastic cable ties. The cables are not secured in any way.

The cables must be properly secured, particularly in a caravan bouncing around whilst being towed.

I cannot see the lights on the electronic box without removing the drawers. I am not sure where the umbilical cord plugs into the box so I am not sure if it is accessible if needed, if I have a problem with wireless operation of the remote.

You must be able to access everything and see all controls and lights.

There are no rubber grommets on the holes where the cables access the battery box, correction there ia split grommet hanging on the wire inside the void below the electronic box.
There should be properly fitted grommets,

You are right to be be concerned and are not being over fussy.

In addition could someone advise me about the positions of the red plastic isolating key in the battery box for operation.
Operation is normally turn clockwise to switch ON and anti clockewise for OFF

Powrtouch do recommend that the wires are not shortened but looped up and cable tied so that if you move it to a different van the wires are not too short.

Thanks Nawer

That you have re-inforced my concerns. That will help me when phoning P/T tomorrow.

Legs down - it's not the looping of the wires that I have concerns about more the fact that they are not secured in any way, as far as I can see, and that the box is in a rather inaccessible position.

Anymore P/T users care to commment please.

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim and Cary, don't have P/T mover, but mine is fitted vertical on the bulkhead between the gas locker and right hand side bed and antenna pointing to rear of van, umbilical cord plugs in at top of unit, isolation switch I had put on bulkhead above control box,and is accessed from gas locker at front of van( I store van at home and battery box unaccessable when parked) Got to mention, if you have remote control engager to apply motor mover DO NOT Leave motor mover power on when A/C hook up conected, as it can blow the circuit board of remote control box, hope this helps

I would ask for another fitter - as I said in your original thread, I had problems with mine when it was first fitted and the fitter went off and left me without demonstrating it - also at the end of the day so I guess he was anxious to get home.

Mine did fail me the second time I used it - fortunately I was on a rally so had help to hook up. A different fitter came out and changed the control box under the bed. It's been fine since.

The red switch is up for off and down for on. In my battery box I have to take the handle off to plug my electric hook up cable in. Don't forget to switch it off when you finish using it, though, because after a certain time it switches off automatically and then you get to your destination and think it doesn't work! There are three handle positions but I don't know why - the instruction book (ha ha) might tell you, I haven't got mine to hand at the moment.

Good luck with PT - let us know how you get on.

Hi,

Mine is fitted to the floor underneath where yours has been fitted ( Senator Vermont ). The cables are looped and tie wraped at the back of the control box and the fuse link is tied in with this if I remember correct. I am an electrician and am sattisfied with the installation as all is secured with wraps and cannot move. The grommets should be fitted correct to avoid chaifing the cables. The cable remote connection is near the lights if I remember, so access is required. The key is on clockwise and will not come out when switched on. Also make sure you disconnect the EHU before using the remote to avoid serious damage.Hope this helps.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH everyone who has contributed of their wisdom and experience.

This morning, as I had always intended, I contacted Powertouch technical support by phone to voice my concerns at abour 10.00am. The VERY helpful chap on the phone listened to my concerns sympathetically and sensitively. He said that the need for access with the "umbilical cord" in the case of radio interference was now less of a problem as they had changed from AM to FM. He then further said that rather than him trying to imagine what I was describing he would arrange for a DIFFERENT fitter to come and look at the installation and remedy it to my satisfaction. He said that someone would contact me in due course. He then helpfully patiently ran through the procedure for using the mover while I carried it out. I spent a little while "playing" with my mover on our sloping drive where it performed faultlessly.

At a little after 11.00 I received a call from the "different" fitter offering to come out immediately!!. John the fitter subsequently arrived travelling over 30 miles from Manchester. I had, had to go to work but my wife popped home at lunchtime to speak with him and go through my "list" of concerns. John thought that the electronic box would be better located on the bed box floor and has made a neat job of moving it there, including, securing the cables - there was less "spare" with the box in this position. The box is now accessible anytime access is needed and the "umbilical cord" can easily be plugged in. He did not have any grommets with him, despite this being mentioned in PT's installation instructions but I will follow PT's alternative suggestion of wrapping some insulating tape around them. Whilst he agreed that the fuse holder was hard to fit in the battery box he said that there was not much could be done about this. I will see if it can be screwed into the back of the battery box but space is VERY tight.

I am now entirely satisfied with the job and would like to COMMEND Powrtouch in the STRONGEST possible terms for their PROMPT and EFFECTIVE customer service response.

So thanks again for all the advice, etc from everyone on this forum.

As a number of you said I find the mover to be WONDERFUL!!!

Regards
Tim

With the controller under the bed you need to be careful not to put bedding on top of it (the controller) as it does get hot in use.

The umbilical cord is also needed if the batteries in the remote go flat.

My control unit is also fitted under the bed; to protect it from damage or overheating from items stored there, I made a small framework/cage that sits over the unit and is screwed to the floor. I used a couple of old metal carpet edging strips (as used in doorways), cut and bent them to required size and shape - two strips each way, very rigid and gives about an inch and a half clearance all round the box.

I fitted our P/T myself to our last van. When we changed to the present one I got the dealer to change it in their workshops. They put it in the same way as I had - but they shortened the wires!!!
Moral: worth being very picky.
