...until we had actually given our van it's first weekend away. Having read the horror stories here that seem to attach to new ones, what they are actually like in the field (sic) and how bad dealers seem to be, we were cautious to say the least.

The Amara was new and I'm not going to say that there weren't some issues - nothing to do with the build quality or the van per se, but from the dealers end ie the £450 you spend on the delivery. Only small things like a faulty fly screen (damaged by them), but things you expect them to pick up. Also if it had been cleaned it was by a blind man with a hangover!

Anyway armed with what I read on here I checked everything before we took her away and by being firm and clear with them got everything sorted and up to standard - oh except the roof which is still filthy but you could not see that at the dealers! You don't expect to have to do this but in reality you do. I think generally they expect to just trouser the £450.

What I've learned so far:

1) Coachman (it's our first with them) appear to be a quality builder and while you pay more you get what you pay for and talking to other Coachman owners they appear to be very satisfied in any dealings that they have had with the company.

2) I can personally vouch for the 380, it's a great van with superb build quality and good towability, but I see very few, actually no others about.

3) Barter hard for the best deal, it's surprising how far they can go after their first offer/s.

4) Don't judge a big dealer by just one of the staff, they are a mixed bunch as humans are - some were great others less so.

5) I would not buy a van new or otherwise that I have not seen. Okay it means even if new it will have been on their lot and probably viewed a bit, but you can see and test for yourself what you are buying.

6) Get the salesman to go off somewhere while you test everything in the van that you can, like how easy the bed is to make and how comfortable/useable it is.

7) The first weekend after you get her go away and really test it and do that at a site near your dealer - be prepared after that to take her back in for any adjustments.

Above all enjoy!

We had a great weekend, the wind, cold and rain were a good test! I was most surprised at how effective the electric blown air was, but all in all the van performed well and we found nothing untoward.

Can't wait to take her to London and then over to France next month.

Some really useful tips there.

Glad your new van is up to scratch (any photos?) and that you had a great weekend. Good luck with your trip to France.

Have to agree about buying a van you can actually see eventhough the roof may be filthy and a few people have been in it. We always buy a van we can see and never order one even if we have to wait to find one and travel a distance.

Enjoy you trips.

Another happy Coachman owner

We were always very please with our Coachman when we owned it, and it was only the weight issues with our current car that prevented us from buying another one at the time afer a 10yr break away from the hobby, but we now have plans to upgrade the car to a diesel in a couple of years time and go looking to buy a Coachman again, although probably a 4 berth, as we now have grandchildren who like to come with us sometimes.

We spotted a fair few Amaras and Pastiches on the CC site last week, but in general there does seem to be a lack of newish smaller caravans in evidence on sites, at 4.60mtr bodylength, we were about the smallest van pitched, apart from a mini Lunar Ariva who had a single occupant. That is probably why you dont see many 3.80mtr Amaras, there is such a vogue at present for the fixed bed, end washroom vans which require at least a 5mtr body length to fit it all in, and it would be nice to see Coachman bring out a 4 berth model in a shorter bodylength than 5 mtrs, just like our old Coachman Genius was, there must be many people out there, us included, that are restricted by drive length and similar factors as to the length of caravan they can buy, and something like this would probably be quite a winner sales wise.

Hi Julia - the 380 is just the range number, but the van is small in modern terms ie 5.73 meters overall length by 2.26 m wide. We had heard about Coachman's being heavy but the Amara 380 (at 1042 MIRO) is directly comparable with the Lunar Stella which is the other van that interested us. They do get heavier from there I gather. The Stella looks a great van it just turned on build quality which to us the Amara just edged (we had set off thinking the Stella was for us!).

We are one of those couples who prefer an end kitchen as it maximises available living space, the bathroom is perfectly useable but kept to a mimimum - we nearly always use the sites own.

We also only want enough space for us, I know the modern trend is for couples to emerge from 4-6 berths even when they don't have kids or grandkids as they like the extra facilities of fixed beds and luxurious bathrooms. If we have anybody to stay we would use the awning.

We will see how she goes on the longer tows to London (to see the marathon) and France (too see the Normandy landing beaches & test the wine!|).

Glad to hear it was ok apart from the poor prep.

We collected our new Pegasus 534 a couple of weeks ago, like you we took it to a local site to try it out.

It was clean when we got it, although taking it home shook out a few bits of polystyrene, but thats normal!

Issues, Bailey are a bit generous with the mastic, but we know that having had 3 previous over many years!

One cupboard catch does not lock firmly, so will get a new one from our dealer.

Had to remove a big lump of mastic from the awning rail to try it!

Looks like our awning will need a slight extension, but cheaper than replacing it!

Everything else works fine, its very warm and comfortable. We really like the pull out seat cushions so you can put your feet up!

Yes a happy Pegasus owner so far!

so next week away for 6 nights for Easter.

Yes I'd seen that and to be fair I don't think on the face of it Coachman are to blame but the dealer certainly is! It re-enforces the point we both made on this thread about the van being already available at the dealers. I'm with you on this and travelled a bit further so I could secure the actual van I wanted directly.

What is it with caravan dealers? You would think when people are pre-ordering a factory built van( that then won't take space on their lot for long) they would go out of their way to provide a great service... But if posts on here are anything to go by you would think they were doing you a favour not the other way around. It's put us of pre-ordering for life!

I think there are lots of owners who don't have any problem with their dealers. They just don't broadcast the facts!!

Not got around to pics yet but a video can be seen here much the same except our interior has rounded cushions on the corners and some dealer specials in terms of added security.
