I've been looking into Red Pennant and done a search on this forum. There doesn't seem to be much discussion about it recently - in fact, nothing since 2008.
I have AA roadside assistance in the UK (OH is a mechanic so went for most basic option which would at least get me towed off the motorway if required)and have never had to use it yet! Well, at least not for me!
So, we are taking the car and caravan to France for 3 weeks and I am looking for some sort of cover. What should I be looking for and how much is it likely to cost me please. I am a member of the Caravan Club
I would get the cover from the CC even if it is more expensive. You have to be careful with continental breakdown/recovery if you are towing. The cheapest cover don't include the caravan & some that do only recover car/caravan if it is the car broken down, ie caravan has failed wheel bearing or accident damage but car ok, no recovery.

Have used their support on health and recovery in Spain and it was brilliant. Bought before through C&CC but left the club & would buy direct next time.
me too but too old to bother these days, green flag through the CClub including home start £85 for the year.suits me fine.plus caravan size is not a problem.they will take you to your holiday and pick you up after and take you home.it would cost more to get towed off the motorway for petrol these days.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

But is that just for UK? Is green flag an option overseas?
no, looks like UK only. So Red Pennant or a cheaper option. Its so difficult - if you have 5 holidays and break down on 1, you'd probably have saved your money by taking the cheaper option, but that one time you break down you'd end up kicking yourself that you hadn't gone Red Pennant.
I'll present OH with the info and let him decide - that way he can't blame me if I make the wrong decision!
What a cop out!
i have read of two or three major breakdowns abroad this year and all were glad they had full cover,as i remember one broke down twice on the same holiday.

I know, its like any insurance though - great to have it if you need it. But if you put all your insurance premiums into a pot and just paid out in the event of a problem it would probably work out cheaper. Its just that people don't put money into a pot - they spend it instead!
I will probably get the Red Pennant cover but it seems like a lot of money - I'll be tempted to force a breakdown so that I feel like I've had my money's worth.

Is your Elddis a big van? If so, have you checked that the AA will recover a big van? You are better to get Mayday from the CC.
The Red Pennant cover is extremely comprehensive if you take the full package, or you can take "Motoring only", which is cheaper.
In both cases you should check if the cover you choose will cover you if the problem is ONLY with the caravan.
Go for Red Pennant cover while it may be expensive it is definately the best by far , you only get what you pay for and unlike some cheaper policy's you won't get left in the lurch .
I never leave the UK without the necessary cover ,it's not worth leaving things to chance .

It was £183 and that was motoring only.
Yes it is a big van - twin axle job!
I have a feeling that the AA may not be interested in helping (without charging) you if you have say a puncture on the van. Yes, they will cover the car, but likely not the van.
