This has been a subject much discussed in the Caravan Club over the past 6 months and on other forums. I certainly would not screw them to the back of the van. You could use adhesive pads. What we need is a supply of peelable stickers that can be easierly removed. I have no idea how strict the Spanish Police are about such things but you are hardly in a position to argue if they are doing checks!

The boards you need are plain yellow with a red edge, must be E marked, alumimium, and are 500 x 250 or something like that. Full details on the CC website.

You can use 2 of these small ones or 1 bigger one. They do not need to be screwed on.

They will cost you £10-20. The fine imposed if you are stopped and measured could be 110 euros I think. Not worth risking.

Last year we used a mastic bedding tape, which was quite easy to remove when we got home using a spot of White Spirits. The boards should actually be marked E70, and they are the same as you see on the back of an articulated trailer, you will get them from any factor who specialises in commercial vehicles and road haulage.

You need to watch the fixing height though......I think it must be below 1500 mm above ground.

And the Spanish regulations do specify aluminium plates. They even specify the thickness.

Ill have a look in this months C&CC mag, it was in that, but it did say the spanish spec plates are difficult to get here(strange size), but would accept a different standard if you are not from Spain.

will post back tomorrow, unless someone beats me to it

may help

Is this mandatory or are visiting caravan (short stay holiday) uk road legal exempt under ECC ruling. I have a 8m caravan + 4.8 tug = over 12 m ?????

Advice from Caravan Club web site

Large outfits in Spain

If you are travelling to Spain and the total length of your car and caravan or motor home is over 12 meters in length you need to have 2 yellow (with a red outline) reflective stickers on the back of the vehicle.
The dimensions of the stickers must be 25cm wide and 50cm long, they must be placed symmetrically each side at the back of the caravan/motorhome between 50cm and 150cm off the ground. The stickers cost approximately £20.00 for a set of two.
These stickers can be purchased from:
Raymac Ltd
Prospect Works
Showfield Lane
Malton
North Yorkshire

That advice has been withdrawn now Michael. You are not allowed stickers, the plates must be aluminium. The CC printed a retraction a month or 2 later, there should be up to date info somewhere on their website.

looks same as its only italy for alloy

http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/804466/t2530%20-%20first%20time%20abroad.pdf

There is new legislation in Portugal which in practice means that only motor caravans are allowed to carry bicycles at the rear of the vehicle; cars should transport them on the roof provided an overall height of 4m is not exceeded. Drivers of cars with bicycles attached to the back of the vehicle will be subject to a fine. If you wish to carry bicycles in Spain or Italy you will need a 50 x 50 cm relectorised panel, which can be brought from most caravan/motor home accessory shops or from www.fiamma.com – they are available in plastic or aluminium if travelling to Italy the panel has to be aluminium

You can fix them on with double sided tape & you can buy them from any commercial vehicle spares counter. I don't like the idea of drilling the rear of my lorry so mine are fixed on with tape & they don't go anywhere as long as the tape is good.

I don't see why they've decided to have them on caravans, just something else they've dreamed up.

If only our British police were as keen on applying our laws to visiting vehicles as our continental cousins are to us abroad.  (Sighs sadly!)

i fixed mine on with double sided pads bought from the pound shop , but i also drilled a small hole through the top of the plate and threaded an electrical tie through and around the grab handles in case they came loose ,but they never did ,but in my whole month long stay in Spain i never once saw another caravan with these plates on , they are the same plates that are fitted to nearly all HGV vehicles
