Hi

Your opinions / experiences of these would be greatly appreciated please

We have guest staying for a night over Easter in the awning bedroom and are considering buying one of these

In the past we had one for the guest bedroom at home and to be frank it was dire - went down reguarly and often and was more trouble than its worth - complete waste of money. Could this have just been a dodgy one and are you guys all happy with yours which would make buying another worthwhile or should be just forget them and use something else - if so such as?

Thanks in advance

Hi

I don't have my beloved van yet  but I do have a double blow up mattress, its not a floor level one, has 2 layers if you see what I mean and it plugs into the mains, is blown up in 90 seconds and the same to deflate it.  I am sure I got mine from QVC years ago but think you can get them on ebay now click here to see the same one as I have.  I have had no problems with it.  If it is just an airbed, I saw them on special in Tesco tonight when I was in, good luck!!  They are pretty heavy though so not sure if you would put it in the van or carry in your car.

Over the past few years we have bought numerous blow-up airbeds and end up replacing them time after time due to them going down during the night. I dont think we have had one that has suvived more than a few trips out. Only problem is we find them comfortable so we kept replacing them. We did try different types as well but had same problem.

I'd recommend self inflating mats rather than airbeds. Warmer, and IMO more comfortable which I dislike immensly.(though much thinner than an airbed, so it can take a bit of a leap of faith).

Plenty discussion of these over in the Equipment forum.

Having recently moved from tents to caravans, I can thorouoghly recommend the Coleman Comfort air bed - both single or double. (I have both) I've done the self inflating thermarest which are good and warm but they are thin. Cheap airbeds are rubbish and wallowy but the coleman has individual chambers and it was a comfy as my mattress at home. It has two inflation chambers so a couple can have different firmness of mattress (I used to have a firm bed and OH would have a soft one - you can do this with the coleman)

We bought a rechargeable pump and it takes about 15 seconds to inflate and still use it for guests in the house.

If you are camping and it is chilly, the airbeds can be cold but if you put a sheet of plastic beneath the mattress and a sleeping bag over the top of the mattress (or a blanket) it helps insulate it. You may need a little more bedding than before.

As scrumble says, lots of discussion on these on the equipment forum and I bought mine based on what folk on there said.

I've lost count at the number of airbeds we have bought over the years, I saw a low level camp bed for about £25 in our local caravan dealers the other day and reckoned that it would last longer than an airbed and would probably suffer less with the condensation that our airbeds seem to suffer with? It would mean a little more weight but should last for years.

Fat Airacs, which are good, but pricey, or Coleman Double Comfort air beds. These are a very good product and I would not consider any other make. You do get what you pay for.

You will need some sort of insulation on top of the air bed, as air is a very good conductor of heat.

Jim.
