Old but well cared for said the description , gas cooker 4 hobs and oven hot and cold water , shower , etc. pics look great . Rang them up and asked , is there any damp , NO , is there an awning , YES , is it in good condition , YES , will we be able to see everything working YES . Ok great , off we go.

Got there, van is spotlessly clean , as in pics. Only inside the wardrobe the wall is very soft , afraid to prod about too much in case my fingers went through it . seller says they've always kept clothes in there no problem . (although they said on phone there was NO DAMP)it has all been resealed he says .
Asked about the gas , theres no gas bottle here ? seller says they've had the van 2 years , its been on a seasonal pitch all that time.

He lit the gas when he first bought it and it worked fine then , but they've never used it since, they have an electric oven that they use...has no reason to think it wont work now .
He did plug the hookup in and showed us that the lights work and plugged in a fan heater .
Does the gas heater work? well it was lit 2 years ago , but as its an electric pitch , theyve never used it, only the fan heater .
Water pump working ? err theres no water container in the van, but yes it works ....
how about the water heater ....well as there was no water container.....
And the shower has been disconnected , but is there in a carrier bag if we want to fix it back in

Theres an awning, yes ? Ah thats in the shed at home , I'll have to sort out the poles for it , as I took some of them out to use as extra support poles for my new awning for new van . is it in good condition, oh yes very good , except theres a rip in it in the centre front where the middle poles goes through .Tear or stitching undone ? not sure cant remember.

Wouldn't you think if they want to sell this van and have nothing to hide ,they would have a gas bottle in place to show that the gas works, water available to show the taps and water heater working, and at least have the awning there so we could see the canvas.
How can it be possible they have used this on a seasonal pitch for 2 years and never had the gas hob lit.

does seem strange that they want to sell it but cant be bothered to do the basics and get the van ready for sale, I have been to see a couple of vans like this and both times justed walked away, I suggest you do the same, there will be a nice dry van out there with your name on it, and will come with all kit working and shown working by genuine seller.

I wont be buying this , but why waste peoples time saying they can see everything working when clearly they can't.
I feel sure some unsuspecting first timer will probably snap it up , he seemed a really nice bloke . More worrying though , is the gas unsafe or leaking ?

Walk away,if the wall is damp you will spend more time fixing it than using it.

If they have not used the gas for 2 years that means its not had any kind of service.

If they said no damp you should have stuck your finger through the wall.

Seems to me there are lots of reasons not to buy it.

Not sure tbh . Been toying with the idea of trailer tent or caravan for this season , after the last 2 years I seemed to be followed around by hurricanes when using the tents.
We've had a few caravans in the past ,but I like a change now and then ;)
Dont want anything expensive , under 2k , but this one was very local so we went to see it today . have to say I probably would have bought it if everything had been shown working, and tried to fix the damp . It was a 1992 coachman and they wanted £1300.

Its a shame that some poor sole will come along with their hard saved cash & get ripped off.

I suspect he might be a trader dealing in main dealer px's

no give this van a miss I reckon, if you cant see every thing in working order I reckon it dont work, it might look a good price, but I reckon there is a whole load of trouble for someone when they get the van home or on site
walk away and save yourself all the trouble.

Too many ifs, buts and excuses here - I agree with others, you would probably land yourself with a shedload of trouble with this one so walk away from it. The right one for you will come along soon.

I definatly wouldnt touch this one, i would prefare to wait and maybe save a bit more money up to get a better van, it would be false economy and a lot of hard work to put this one right, even with the problems you have spotted up to now.

Have you got yourself a damp meter for your next viewing?  You can't always feel damp just by hand!  What you think may be dry your damp meter will not...

Like op said there is a 'van out there with your name on but it will take you a while to find it.

Good Luck on your search and let us know what you eventually end up with even if it is another tent, tt or folding camper lol

I would say to everyone buying a secondhand van - get a pre-purchase inspection carried out. You will have a proper damp report and an independent view of the van. Take a look at the mcea and they will have a mobile engineer near to you.
