We have an old caravan, that we purchased a few years ago.

I bought a new leisure battery (85 amp).  My question is, when I got the caravan there was a Marine offshore charger next to the battery, which says:

Power supply

Input 115/230v -50-60Hz.

Output - 12v   Output 12amp   Output 144watts  - 50-60Hz.

To my inexperienced eye this seems to be a lot for my little battery.

What is the opinion of an electrically minded person please.

Depends in the output voltage, If its around 12.8- 13v you should be OK to leave it on, If its above that it could gas the battery and eventually boil it dry.

Thats the problem sometimes you dont know if the charger was only used to topup the battery or left on 24/7 like a caravan charger.

All I know is that in addition to the data I stated, it says 'unregulated power supply'.

I just have a feeling that it's too strong!  The battery is less than two years old & I've had to top it up twice.

Output should be 12volt if its 144watts at 12 amp.

Hi,...and Happy Easter,.....I've checked the continious output and it says 15 Volt on my Tester ( sorry being so ignorant) when it comes to electrical things;....Thanks again.

That will be 15 volts with no loading, when you put a 12 amp load on it you will find the volts will drop to 12.

You best bet is to buy a new charger that you know will trickle charge the battery - that is not saying that the charger you have is no good, just that to protect the investment you made on the battery it might be worth buying a new charger to use with it.
