We hope to get away Wednesday Evening for a trip down to Gwithian from Birmingham. We have 2 options, 1) is travel overnight, pick the van out of storage in Truro and travel on for an early pitch on Thursday morning or 2)is travel late Wednesday pick the van up in Truro and find somewhere to lie up for the night before travelling on to Gwithian in the morning. I prefer option 2 as we would get a full day on Thursday and I wont feel drained after a 250 mile trip overnight. The only problem is we will be very late on Wednesday and I think we will need to find a "free" carpark or something similar to pitch on overnight.
Any ideas?

The problem will be that by the time we have left Birmingham, got the van out of storage and travelled on down to Gwithian than it will probably be past 11.00pm.

I recall there is a layby roughly opposite St Ives Bay Holiday village that we could lay up in overnight and then carry on to Gwithian in the morning. Its very clear on Google maps but I cant remember if there is generraly anything parked in it or if its big enough to turn the van in.

not being a vanist my self i don't know how much room you needto turn, but on google maps there are 2 laybys  on the same side as St ives bay holiday park. one just after the holiday park and 1 a few turns further on just after the lane for gwithian towans carpark

coming from hayle you shouldn't need to turn between these and gwithian.

I'd still check with Gwithian about overnighting outside their reception. I'm sure I've read that in their rules.

between the 2 of us we are pretty much down there all summer. Do you go to the NT beach just up the road?

why cant you travel early Thursday morning pick the van up around mid day and complete the journey in one hit , personally i dont think 250 miles is that far , i have drove double that distance in France in one day

Thanks Joe, I am trying to get a full day out of the Thursday if possible as we will be travelling back to Brum on the Sunday so want to get the most out of our 4 days as possible. If we travel down early overnight wednesday I tend to get little sleep before driving which leaves me washed out on the Thursday.

Rob with 2 dogs we tend to go to either Longrock near Penzance or over to Dynamite key round the back of the estuary. However when we were down in March Dynamite key was locked and gated as there is heavy machinery on the beach and they are using the carpark to store sand that is being taken out of the estuary. There is huge local discontent as its causing great inconvenience to the one local beach that is dog friendly and there is no sign that it will be open when the dog restrictions come into force. I assume they are clearing the estuary in readiness for the wave hub installation thats now got planning approval.

Sorry Rob thanks for spotting the 2 layby's had no seen them. I still dont know how realistic it is to stop at the roadside and expect to get any sleep there.

Yes Rob thats the same beach at the bottom of Dynamite quay. Just before the church there is a triangle of grass which you turn right and opposite there is an opening which appears to be private but is actually a rough track down to the parking at the quay. You then walk about 20 yards along the beach and you will be at the bottom of the steps that led through the golf course.
