Hi all, we have just got back from our Easter break and when we arrived i set up as normal and all was going well but when i switched on the water heater on electric it tripped out the mains on the van and the outside unit, tried it a few times but with no luck,we managed by using the gas which worked perfect, tested it again when we got home but also tripping my house fuse box so wasn't the fact it was a low amp site, its a Truma 10 litre heater and the van is a 2002 Swift, does anyone have any clues to what the problem maybe.

Sounds like a fault in the element most likely.

1    Is it the main switch in the van tripping, the one with an RCD?

2   There should be a spur unit feeding the heater, a switch with a small fuse. If you switch it off does the mains stays in?

3   If you switch it on does the mains trip.

If 2 and 3 are yes it points to the heater being faulty.

If 2 is no it points to a wiring fault.

Not totally conclusive if the fault in the wiring is neutral to earth.

Hi and thanks for the reply,as soon as i switch the heater on it trips the van, if i then flick the trip switch back on it trips the house, i thought it may be the element, are these easy to locate and change?.

Yes you can get them from here. Need to make sure it is the element gone. They changed in about 2003 from 450W to 850W so make sure you get the right one. You can measure the resistance with an ohmeter. 450W = 115 Ohms. 850W = 60 Ohms. Either connection L or N to earth should be 1 MegOhm or more.

erm...

If the element is gone you wouldn't be able to check the resistance would you?

Isn't it possible to fit the 850w in place of the 450w anyway ensuring a quicker heating time?

This happened to us, not with a water heater but the fire, it kept tripping and also tripped the house, we found that it was one of the sockets, on the Abbey vogue 2000 the fire and the sockets are on the same fuse, a wire on one of the sockets and broken and caused the van to trip.
