Hi, we will be putting up our awning for the first time next week and the instructions say to clean the awning rail. Can anyone tell us if we need any special cleaning stuff or whether it's just a case of washing it and making sure it's not blocked up.
just clean mine with a rag and soap,i use a soft brush first dipped in the soapy water first. please avoid any soapy substance from coming into contact with the awning.let it dry first.

I have some wd40 , can I use this in the awning rail or is it oil based and will damage the waterproofing?
I'm sure we used to spray furniture polish, mr sheen or something like that , in our awning rail on our last caravan to make the awning go in smoothly, was that wrong ?
Debbie, I'm pretty sure that WD40 would stain your awning, and it might damage the waterpoofing but i'm not sure on that point. I'm sure someone will come along and let us know.
Tentz, thanks bunch I'll have alook in Halfords.
Is it a good idea to clean with soapy water first and then use the silicone spray?
Beeswax based furniture polish such as original Pledge works well, we have used it on all our vans over the years without any problems, just wipe away any residue afterwards and leave it to dry, makes insertion of the awning beadstrip so very easy to slip along the rail.

This silicone spray , is it different to wd40?

WD40 dissolves adhesives (among other things) so beware of getting it near sealant on the caravan.
I use one of those awning rail brush/lubricant spray deals you see in caravan dealers. The brush could be more robust, but it does the job. Using the lube means my slot's easier to slip into and the erection process comes off much more quickly.
Oh grow up!
