following on from this thread here

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=8&TopicID=213054&get=last#3136847

the insurerers have said the estimate to fix the van is £6000 and no I havent added an extra 0 on there either.I nearly fell of my seat being honest I knew it wouldnt be cheap but was thinking around the 3k mark.
strangely enough they havent said yet what they are doing as the loss adjuster dealing with it is on holiday until monday so will have to wait and see.
added to the fact our car has also broken down with an ecu problem it hasnt been a good week for us.

Now that is both sad and annoying in fact doubly annoying with the car problems.

No doubt the estimate is £6000 for insurance, £3000 if you're paying, £1000 if you get a freelance caravan repairer to do it or less than £300 if you do it yourself

Will you get the chance to buy it back or would you not be interested now?

hi rune they wont sell it back as per the company policy but being honest in the week thats passed since it happened my will to have a caravan has weaned a little.we had a very lucky escape in terms of injury etc and i cant get that out my mind.
at the moment i dont want to tow again as i couldnt be that lucky twice.
as for the estimate i have no idea how they got to that figure but i couldnt repair it lol my diy skills are non existant

Hi fife-bloke, that is very sad. I can understand your reluctance to tow, I would probably feel the same.

What a shame.

I can understand your reluctance to tow but it's still quite fresh & raw yet.  You may feel differently about it in a few weeks.  Either way, you may be as well towing something sooner rather than later just to give that bit of confidence back.  Even if you choose not to repair/replace your caravan it may put some demons to rest.

Hey you must have caught the month of February that I had

Though I didn't have a problem with the van (except that I didn't get to work on the new one as planned) I certainly had a disastrous time with vehicles.

Think positive my friend

Hi fife-bloke sorry to here  about van, well you've had your 3bits of bad luck,it can only get better,as for your DIY skills you never know till you try,my first van was rotten, not one complete strut of wood from front to back and top to bottom, only the markes on the pannels was only indication that i had to go on for measurements,I did'nt know anything about caravans, and I totaly re built it from the chassis up,pity was'nt a bit nearer your location may have been able to help

Hope you get a good price/payout for her!  If not a caravan what about a tt or folding camper?  A trailer is still towing but not quite so big as a caravan?  Then maybe one day you will feel confident enough to get another caravan...

van is now a confirmed write off.
interesting though the loss adjuster is gobsmacked that the repair centre have quoted £2700 for parts and wait for it.......

£3400 for labour costs

his very words were "you could build a van from scratch for less than that"
so I await the cheque-or the excuse for not paying out

And as for those labour costs - think I'll go & get trained to be a caravan repair lady!

£3400 / £75 (Assumed hourly rate) = 45hrs labour. Just over a weeks work for one repairman. Does seem a bit excessive.

I'd say a day for stripping out. A day for structural repairs, & a day for re-fitting fixtures etc.
