So we've decided to take the van to Mull this summer. As far as ferries go there seems to be 2 options, Oban to Craignure, nigh on £140 for car, van and passengers or Lochaline to Fishnish going via the corran ferry above lochaber which will come out at about £50 all in.
obviously, if we can save ourselves £90 we'll do it but it would be good to hear from anyone who has done the second option and hear your opinions of how easy/difficult the route is to negotiate with a caravan in the summer, ie. is it busy, tight, twisty, hilly?
The road to Lochaline is single track for about the last 20 miles, which put us off using it, plus it's a lot easier to get to Oban. We went from Oban to Craignure last year. Once you are on Mull, many of the roads there are single track as well, but ypu can get to Sheiling or Balmeanach sites on ordinary roads. There are only 3 sites and we think they are expensive but Mull is lovely.

We've been over to Mull, Oban/Craignure in the car a couple of times so we have an idea of how exciting the roads there can get, especially when the service bus is hurtling towards you we'd probaly aim to travel acoross the island in the evening when the day visitors had gone.
20 miles of single track sounds daunting, although there usually seem to be ample passing places up there.
The Lochaline road can be done with a caravan. It is narrow, twisty and hilly, but we did it a couple of years ago (oK, we are silly inconsiderate German tourists...). You have to be cautious and drive defensively though, to avoid to have to reverse to the last passing place. The ferry was no problem either. A large, open boat. Mull is lovely but all roads except the one on the east coast from Tobermory to Craignure are single track.
thanks chris, i think we'll have a go that way, we've done the road to oban so many times when we used to rent statics at benderloch that it'll be nice to have a change.
