... heard that Calor will exchange this for a new Calorlite. Is this true cos my local dealer (hardware shop) says it will mess up his stock and Calor will charge him!!
I reckon your local hardware shop isn't interested in supplying you Highlander.
There are some dealers however who have been advised to replace like-for-like from Calor and some I've found who will supply more or less what you want. I don't know if their agreements vary depending on how big a supplier they are, but if you nose round you'll find someone who'll do the swap for you.

Just returned from 2 weeks away and what a problem getting a Lite cylinder!
My idea was to run my old Butane 7kg down then replace it with a new Lite cylinder. I had checked with Calor who said it would be a straight replacement but neither the Caravan Club site or the local suppliers in the area - 5 in total - would do it.
The Caravan Club said that they were only "agents" and it needed to be a dealer?
Anyway home now after getting a refil for my smaller propane cylinder which also ran out.
The moral to the story I suppose is to get the refil before you need it!!!!
Early this year I had my Lite propane bottle refilled and cost me £27. I asked if I could bring back my normal butane and swap it for another lite propane and was told I had to pay for a new deposit. So I politely told him that he could stick it where the sun dont shine.

Butane 7kg and propane 6kg are in the same exchange group as calor lite so any of those can be exchanged one for one with each other. CC sites and maybe a few other camp sites will only exchange like for like so if you want to exchange to calor lite from either of the 2 I mention above go to a calor shop.
None of the other calor cylinders are officially exchangeable for 7kg butane, 6kg propane or calor lite however you may find some agents (like garages) who will exchange any cylinder for a 6kg propane (they might not if they sell calor lite) so exchange your dumpys or 16kg etc for 6kg at the garage and when that runs out change the 6kg at a calor store for the calor lite - this is what I did twice.
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
We use The 6kg propane calorlite bottles. (we have 2) We are still using the same bottle after about 4 months use and still have loads left. We use our cooker (including oven) a lot. No need to worry about running out while away
Since my earlier post I found that I can get the exchange done at Go Outdoors and with the discount card it is considerably cheaper than using the CC site anyway.
It does seem to me that CC site shops are very loosly regulated and that each site can do just about anything they like to get even more money of their members.
The letter that eventually came back from the CC after 6 months seems to confirm my views.
Our Go Outdoors is along the same road as a Calor Gas Official shop. Calorlite was £10 cheaper in Go Outdoors so its worth paying for the discount card.

Is it the CC that is selling the gas though? I've talked to a few of their wardens and it appeared that they are the ones who buy the shop stock and sell it for themselves to supplement their wages, could be the same for gas.

Whilst I have changed two Calor 6 kgs, at different places/times, for CalorLites, in each case I had to take out a new contract but these documents were FOC.
Neither required a sighting of the old contracts, thankfully as I did not take them with me.

I would like to change from the Calor 4.5Kg (blue) butane to the 6Kg (red) propane Calor Lite but the bottle connection is different. Can I buy an adaptor and if so where? or will I need to buy a new pigtail?
Dave.
You do not need to buy a new pig tail you just need a propane connector that will screw into the bottle end of the butane pigtail like this item 01-1674

Thanks John, thats a pity, my Cadac runs off the same bottle and it will mean a new regulator for that. I also have a back-up Camping Gaz 907 that I use in France with an adaptor if the Calor runs out. Maybe too much faffing about to bother changing.
Dave.
Regulator is less than £8 and new pigtail about the same price so worth it in the long run especially if you winter caravan.
