Hi all, I am looking for a caravan 5 berth. I have a Renault scenic with MPTW of 1050 ( in other cases) 1350 (driver only). We are a family of 5. Is it realistic to get a 5 berth van with all our stuff to be towed with our car. I don't want to spend more than £4000. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks
------------- Its not your job that counts but what you do in your spare time!!
What about a smaller van, maybe even a 2 berth and stick on an awning with sleeping compartments for the kids. The catering facilities in a small van are not usualy any less than in the bigger ones and you can till seat as many round the table. That way you are somewhere between caravaning and camping.
You need to start from the kerb weight of your van to assess the weight of caravan it can tow rather than the max towing weight. Just looking at Scenincs I couldn't find one with a 1050 MPTW but one with 1350 tow weight is given as a kerb weight of 1290 (2l model). That would give you a caravan with a MPTLM of 1096Kg (using the 85% principle). You don't say whther you have a deisel or petrol engine which would also make a difference on what you could tow comfortably.
Doubt that you could find any 5 berth at 1096 MTPLM. That's more at the 2 berth end. Caravanning is about compromises and adybaby suggests a fair compromise if you are keeping with the car and the budget.
