Today we looked at a Lunar Clubman caravan that has Alde heating. I have heard about this heating but have no experience of it. Does anyone have this in their caravan and how does it compare to the usual blown air heating in most caravans?. Some people have said that the heating in Lunar caravans is not great and we are wondering if its worth paying the extra money for a higher spec that includes Alde heating. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

We are great fans of the Adle system and it would be a difficult decision to buy any van without it.
It gives a stable and draft free form of heating and like a home system it can be set up to come on automatically.
A downside for the un-organised is that it cant give near instantaneous heat, so you need to use the programmer so the vans warm if returning late.
It cant run without 12 volts even on minimal heat and it cant be near silent as a Truma can on minimal heating.
I dont think I know anyone who has had it who would not want it again rather than return to blown air, but its an expensive option.

Do you know anyone with a Lunar and the Alde system? As the heating appears to be problematic i would like to know if the Alde keeps the caravan warm during the winter.

We have Alde heating in our Sterling, would agree with JTQU, but would say that our Alde is almost silent in operation, certainly on electricity.

The Alde system was invented in Sweden and is used extensively in Scandinavia (and the rest of Europe) where people often site their van to use when ski-ing, so it is very good at keeping the van warm in winter.

It does take longer to warm up than the blown air, so we carry a small fan heater too (always useful in emergencies anyway) and run that (depending on the EHU) on 2kw with the Alde on 1kw plus gas for about the first 20-30 minutes.

The Alde uses 2kw max in our van, some have 3kw elements.
The gas is equivalent to 6kw on ours, so heats things up much faster. Once up to temp the 2kw electric element is fine unless it is really cold.

We leave it on all the time, you can set a lower temp while out, also the programmer does a special night-time temp set back.

Take a look at the Alde website, you can read all about it. New vans will be fitted with the 3010 boiler.

We bought our present van specifically because it has the Alde system.

We love the alde heating and wouldnt go back to the blown heating if we can help it, and yes it does keep you warm in winter! too warm sometimes but we are snug and sitin t shirts,

When you set up , in the winter put the electric on and put the gas on as well and it gives it an extra boost, when it gets up to temp the gas will click off, but we normally turn the gas off, time we have set up the water etc and legs outside , the van is nice and warm, We were advised that the gas heating runs on propane(red bottle) and not butane(blue botle) if i have got that the right way around!!!! but definately use the red bottle!

We normally find the 1 kw is fine for constant heat.

It is like your radiators at home if you find its not heating up  all round there are the air valve thingys on  different places aound the van clamber around and release the air till you see the blue fluid and hopefully you have released any airlocks in the system.

As jennifernn has said we leave it on all the time and if the van drops below the set temperature that yo program in then th heating comes on, even on a chily night in the summer and temp drops it will click in and give a warmer touch to the van

wouldnt be with out it we have a 2008 van and looking at newer vans i cant see any with the alde heating in it not sure if any 2010 vans have the alde heating in.

We also find ours is silent running and i think it heats up quicker that the blown air,it is nice to watch the temperature gauge rise as the van gets warmer lovely to get out of a shower with warmed towels ready use!!

I would go for it we have never had problems with ours  and at a service the fluid is topped up but you can get the mixture made up for you we keep a bottle in the van.

The 2010 Luncar Clubman vans have the Alde heating and also have a heated towel rail. Real luxuries! Unfortunately we can't change our van this year - hopefully next year!

The Swift Conquerors and Sterling Elites have it in the twin axle vans. That started from 2008 when the Bessacarrs were discontinued.

You can use either butane or propane, but if you plan winter use then propane is the one. We have gone over to the CalorLite bottles.

one problem with wet central heating is that you cant get a quick warm in a cold layby when you stop for a cuppa. The old gas fire gave a rapid local heat up.Does anyone use a small catalytic gas heater in this situation or have any other ideas?
