We tried with the awning, large and porch and failed miserably. We thought we wouldn't bother anymore and get a small quick erect tent for the dogs when we go for a weekend.
Can anybody advise on these 'clip on awnings' and are they any easier to fit?
Our caravan came with a large awning and a porch awning - both a nightmare and not worth bothering with for two days. Has anybody any other suggestions for our three dogs? We thought a tent would be good because we could set it up quickly, put the cages in.
Hi Christina , What exactly was the problem with the awnings? what could you not get right ?
I'd say waht you need is someone to help show you how the awnings go up properly, not buying another one or a tent for the dogs .
if you have a decent porch awning already it would be well worth your while giving it another go . I'm using a porch awning now for the first time ever and find it so much easier than the full awning ,which I admit can be a bit of a faff to put up, especially for a beginner.
The benefit of an awning is somewhere to keep wet coats , muddy boots etc , as well as somewhere to sit outside and still have some shade , or when it starts getting a bit windy or chilly and you dont want to be stuck inside the van. you would really lose out if you just got a tent for the dogs .
If you can say what the problem putting the awning up was, maybe someone will have the answer .

No instructions. Two tired and ratty people - only 60 % of the awning (we didn't know that at the time, we have the rest now).
The problem with putting the big awning up was we couldn't seem to get the poles we had to match up with the instructions or the colour coding and suspected after sometime that it wasn't all there. We then had a look at the porch awning and found that to be just as bad but just as well we didn't try because it turned out it wasn't all there! Also, no instructions. Just put off the whole awning thing on the day.
We've been looking at the sun camp scenic and thinking they may be the way for us to go.
Ah! no wonder you were peed off with it. now you have the complete set though , it would be worth giving it another go.
Once you have worked out where the poles should go it wont be half so bad
i just got a caravan with 2 awnings, one big, one porch, 3 annexes and the poles all mixed up for the lot of them .
I searched the web and found instructions and diagrams, and have now sorted them out .I laid them out in the garden and worked out where the poles went before trying them on the van.
it turned out that 2 of the annexes dont even belong to either of the awnings and i still have a few extra poles left over .
whats the make of the awnings? If you can find pole diagram instructions it will be so much easier.
I cant offer any opinion on the scenic , though they look easy enough , like half a tunnel tent . my personal thoughts are I like the sturdiness of the traditional awnings.
I have purchased a lot of used tents and awnings and enjoy the thrill of sorting it out & getting it up without instructions but if that is not your thing i would recommend the likes of the sunncamp ultima 260. Very easy to erect in 15 mins.

Ya damn right!
hey shaft , I thought it was just me being strange , glad to hear someone else enjoys the challenge of sorting it out too .
I did already have a bit of knowledge of how an awning should go up, we've had caravans in the past .
But its much more difficult if you have never had an awning before though.
do you want to come visit my house where I currently have 2 awnings (full and porch) and their poles all jumbled into one big bag!! My job this weekend is to try and sort them before going away for the first time next weekend!

We have the Outdoor Revolution Compactalite, which is very similar to the Ultima and makes a decent size porch awning. Does have one rigid pole across the outside and comes with storm straps fitted. First time up, took about 20 minutes to work out, now OH throws it up in ten mins while I get the kettle on! We have the smaller one (250 or 260) and there is room for table and 3 chairs plus the usual awning bits n bobs. Im not saying it would withstand a gale force wind, but then I think most of us wouldnt bother in those conditions anyway! We have been pleased with ours.
We've had an Ultima 260 - dead easy. We've also got the Sunncamp Scenic - even easier but not that roomy, we only use it in winter for coats & boots, not really room for tables & chairs. We've now got a Kampa Rally 390 that we've not tried yet but basically the same as the 260 with an extra section.
Don't suppose any of the peops who enjoy a challenge will be in the Oxfordshire area on 31st May when we get our full awning out of the box for the 1st time? Never had a full awning before so no idea how to put it up (even with instructions!)
We decided to go for the Outdoor revolution porchlite. I think this just may be within our limited capabilities. We might graduate to something bigger and slightly more complex in a few years. This looks about an ok size for the dog cages and boots and coats.

One tip:
Ignore the instructions (especially if they are anything like the ones we have for our)
