Having spent many weekends pottering around a local caravan sales I've got a question for owners of newer models. There is obviously a sink in the kitchen but no draining board. How do you wash up? I'd be interested to hear how you manage,
The drainer sits on the worktop and extends over the sink, the van you were looking at either had their drainer nicked or it was in the cupboard, they usually sit against the wall behind the kitchen tap. see link
A lot of new vans, some with fancy rounded sinks and the more traditional rectangular ones generally come with a plastic drainer that just sits to the side of the sink and allows the water to drain away. Some vans have larger sinks with a sunken stainless steel drainer built-in such as the Compass Rallye/Elddis Crusader later model vans. In the vans that you have been looking at the accessories will be there but are often removed by dealers to avoid theft. Sadly some people treat caravan showrooms like a caravan supermarket, but without tills! :)
Our chopping board fits inside our drainer and then fits inside the sink for storage, it then has a glass lid that folds down over it, some vans nowadays though have just a sink sunk into the worktop with no cover, I presume the drainers for those are stored in the cupboards after use.
I was quite obsessive though about choosing a van with a good amount of worktop space, it was the reason we only had our previous van a few months, it was so inconvenient trying to cook/wash up when there was no space once the drainer was out.
I sometimes wonder if caravan producers actually spend some time living in a caravan to gather all the problems that some customers may feel are unacceptable pre production. We would gladly offer our services on this matter and would give as experienced caravanners positive and negative feed back.

But would you be able to tow the van you come up with
Unfortunately the kitchen is a major area of compromisation so if you want a big kitchen area you need a bigger van otherwise you lose seating and sleeping or storage and toilet but remember the arrangement must not only suit you, as designer, but also everyone else that may buy the van.
Incidentally the OH prefers to wash up using on-site facilities or in the awning.
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
I must admit, If I can, I will use the onsite facilities when washing up.

I have an older van, 95 model which has a tiny round sink and about 4 inches of built in draining board beside it . its only big enough for a few cups ,nowhere to drain a pile of dinner plates . so I use a washing up bowl in the awning or on a table outside in the sun . I use an asda plastic shopping basket as a drainer, and also use it to carry dishes to site washup facilities.
My 2005 lunar has a fab sink it's stainless steel and drainer for a van it's massive, however because of this you do loose valuable work top, but I still love it.

yup, I saw a lady with one on site once and thought it was great idea . I mentioned it in passing to a friend , and the next week he presented me with the asda basket. he said he just forgot he had it in his trolley and loaded it straight into the car .
Argos and Tesco Direct sell compact sink drainers that someone posted about a couple of weeks ago (was it Val or woofers?) Anyway, they look to hold a reasonable amount and dont take up much space.
I used to have great little drainer in our previous van . it was plastic, and only half the width of a normal one , and came with a tray to catch the drips underneath . I got it from the poundshop , will have to look for another .
