I've forgot to wind up thje jockey wheel before, but didn't travel more than a few yards. Never had one come loose though. Do you always check to make sure that when you wind up the jockey wheel the bottom bit fits into the cut out grooves on the shaft? When we first started caravanning, we didn't realize we had to do this, but always check now.
Hope you didn't have too much damage, although I suspect a new jockey wheel may be the order of the day! Sorry to hear about the problem.
