Having had enough of the fact that the aerial fitted on the van is useless on about 95% of the sites that we go to OH has decided that he's prefer the digital aerial that is on the longer extension that drops into the wardrobe.

Now we've been to the dealer that we got the van from [excellent service] they have said that they can fit it [both OH and I agree that we'd like it done properly] and they aren't going to charge us a huge amount to do it. So that is that covered.

What I'm looking for is....do any of you out there have this type of aerial [the Status 530 with longer mast]...is it worth the money or have you regretted getting that type?

Many thanks.

My photos allow you to see what I saw at the time that I took it....No messing.

There is no such thing as a 'digital' aeriel.  Having said that many more modern aeriels pick up a stronger signal.  Have you checked all the connections on the old aeriel? - many were delivered incorrectly fitted a few years ago.  Personally we've never had any bother with the old flying saucer, we now have the one you are thinking of buying, I found it a bit fiddly to set up but bought a signal meter for £10 and now it's a doddle to do.

To be quite honest with the location of many of the best sites you would be better off, if you really need television, getting a satellite system.

Quite a few of the sites that we visit either have no or very poor terrestrial reception, so if you are paying out to have a arial fitted make it a satellite dish

It depends where you are. If you are in an area where the analogue signal has been switched off, the digital signal will have ben boosted up to a much stronger signal. Things will improve in the next yr or so as the analogue signal is gradually switched off all over the country.

To check digital reception where you are going just put the campsite postcode into the freeview website & it will tell you the strength of the signal.

After years of being disappointed with the quality of picture we got with the Status Aerial getting analogue signal I have to say that I have sort of changed my mind when it comes to getting a digital signal. On several occassions we have go a perfect picture with both the round aerial and the new directional status one. I think the directional Status gives you more options. Strangely I found we immediately got a better picture by using a TV with a built in digital tuner rather than a set top box. In the end however we went for a satellite dish as we wanted to use it abroad.

We occasionally have problems with TV reception but generally there is little problem using the standard caravan TV aerial.  We use a TV with built in digital/freeview.  The TV also has a built in DVD player so we just take a few DVD's with us in case we're desperate.  Many of the better sites that have a known problem with TV reception will have seperate aerial connections (usually on the EHU bollard) for caravanners to plug in to.  As has already been mentioned, we have found that areas that have already fully switched over to digital have provided us with good reception.  The worst reception we got was in an area that was switching over to digital and shutting down analogue the week we were there - the channels were all over the place.

My thoughts are that there is no need for an additional aerial (I don't think there is any such thing as a 'digital' aerial thought - but I stand to be corrected!).  IMHO I would just get your existing aerial checked out to make sure it it working properly, and go with the flow!

I found satellite the easiest, having tried both, no retuning, just use a meter, point the dish south, and turn it towards the west, the sky sat is the first on you reach, its only got a 3degree beam on it, if you find one that seems to have a really large range, you have gone too far.

for sattelite, all you need is a sight of the south western sky.

I found an advantage with the omnidirectional status aerial last time out. I failed to get an adequate signal with my aerial on it's mast as I was unsure of exactly which direction to point the aerial so eventually and not expecting very much turned to the staus ( which rarely gives a decent picture ). I did however get passable analogue pictures at one point in the scale, so the following day remade the connections on the proper aerial, plugged it in and rotated the mast until the pretuned programs were at their best then did a digital tune and got a perfect picture.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

If the site is in a poor reception area, digital or analogue, you still will not get a good signal.
No such thing as a digital aerial so I guess the OP will be wasting their money.
For the same money you could buy a Sat dish, tripod, secondhand Sky digibox and always have a good picture and have a better selection of free to air channels.

The 530 directional aerial will perform much better than the saucer 350 type, but digital signals are often too weak particularly if you caravan in remote and hilly areas.

I fitted a 530 and am very pleased with it but I also carry a satellite dish and system for those places where terrestrial TV is not viable.

Not that the satellite system is a 100% effective as the dish must have an unobstructed view of the satellite cluster.[Astra 28.2E]. Trees etc can often be in the way.

So unless your on a tight budget having both the terrestrial 530 and a satellite system is we find the best option; the 530 is less hassle that playing with the dish if there is a viable signal, but the dish works anywhere it can see the satellite.
