we go A64 to Malton then the A169 Pickering to Whitby over the moors. Nothing too major on there to worry about , Hole of Horcum just be careful on the bendy bits and on blue bank as you approach Whitby needs care.

off up there ourselves in a fortnight

Hi.

Sutton Bank on the A170 is a no-no.

You could consider taking the A59 to the York ring road then the A64  turning off to Pickering and on to Whitby.

We're just back from Robin Hoods Bay. If it's Middlewood you're going to, there's a nice friendly pub a short walk from the site.

Sutton Bank has signs before you come to it saying that its not suitable for caravans, if you are going that way.
I personaly wouldnt want to tow a caravan either up or down it.

From Lancashire????? Depends where you are but...A59 to Harrogate. Travelling through Wharfedale - glorious. When you drop down to the bottom of the hill into Harrogate (a few miles after Menwith Hill early warning station - golf balls you can't miss them) you come to a roundabout at the A61. Left hand lane and straight on up a hill. Take your time so that those in front are ahead then if the lights are red you can slowly approach - easier than a standing start though not a steep hill. Keep on that road through a number of lights till you come to a roundabout. Straight on (through  larged grassed area called the Stray) (Wetherby Road) and after about half mile Yorkshire Show ground on your right. Keep going along that road for about 2 miles till you come to a roundabout and turn left. That is the Harrogate - York Road.

If you look at a map you may think that you are directed through Harrogate Town Centre but it is around the town centre (still in the built up area). I tow my van up and down this road a lot heading to the Dales. No cars parked along the road so no tricky overtaking. Doddle.

Anyway keep on York road till you come to York. Large garden centre on your right and then a roundabout. Turn right onto Ring Road. Maps may suggest left but the right turn is best IMO. Keep on that road for about three roundabouts (I think) till you are signposted to the A64 (Hull Scarborough) turn left

Keep on that dual cariageway till your signed off it to Malton (A64). Take By pass round Malton then turn onto A169 to Pickering. Roundabout in Pickering straight on still on A169 over Heartbeat country to Whitby.

Enjoy the journey and your hols

Phil

If you are stuck for a loo the only one I can think of is for you to come off the A64 York By Pass at the Hull/Bridlington exit and take the A1079 to Hull (right hand lane as you come up the slip road and round the island). Down the A1079 and after about 150 yds after the roundabout off the By pass through some traffic lights and then 100 yds on your left a layby. Cafe and toilets and plenty of room to pull in with your van. Then turn right back onto the A1079 back to the York (turn right) By-pass and head for the Malton turn off.

So you are only going about 1/2 mile out of your way for a loo. Don't bother with the coffee at the Cafe unless you have milk in your fridge. Its just sooooo hot.

We go A59, A19, A172, A173 and into Whitby on A171. Holiday traffic on the A64 is a nightmare in summer and we find this quicker because you arent sitting in jams and there is less traffic generally. Also avoids the steep hill in Sleights.
