Hi,

I'm looking for any advice please. I've wanted a Freedom for a while and have seen one today (a Jetstream 200) which belongs to someone I know and trust. It's early 90's, is in pretty good clean condition outside. The inside is also quite clean but the roof lining is sagging all over(which I know is normal for a Freedom) and probably needs replacing...I've read that people replace these themselves in various ways. In fact, almost every advert I've seen for a Freedom has mentioned the roof lining sagging problem. The wall lining is also sagging slightly in places - is that normal too? It has a very slight smell of mould but the owner tells me that the roof lining fell down a bit on one side during the winter- she thinks that this blocked the air vent on the wall, causing the smell...which is really very feint. Cupboards, toilet, everything else seems sound and clean. She has had it serviced regularly by someone I know so I could check it out with him.....any thoughts about the whole thing though? She is asking £800 - I know Freedoms hold their price so this seems reasonable.

I'd be very grateful for any ideas, advice etc....thank you in advance!

Penny

Sounds like its damp to me, I'd leave well alone. A caravan should not smell of mould.

mould = damp     saggy = problem     I had damp at the front of an old van and once you see sag then it is the start of things going wrong   my van was 13 years old so not unexpected       be wary it is your first van so yo uwant it to be right   maybe you can get a damp meter from a local dealer to check things out     far better to be safe now than sorry later    good luck and don't give up  there are load of vans aroung so keep looking    ask your friend what the service peoiple said about the van at the last service  can you have a look at the documentation?

freedoms rarely suffer from damp.it will be very easy to check for damp as the roof and wall linings are a sponge/foam type material and this will actually feel damp to the touch, unlike a conventional caravan with wooden sides which nine times out of ten will hide the first signs of damp. Also 'in the worse case scenario, even if the caravan is damp, freedoms can easily be repared and sealed as the consruction of the walls and floor include very little wood to rot.The places to check for damp are around the windows and skylight as with a normal caravan as the sealant will perish over time .hope this helps
