Hi all, i am travelling to Grantown on Spey (Scottish Highlands) from Lancashire in 3 weeks, but i want to break the journey up and stop off overnight on a service station / layby, does anyone know anywhere that wouyld be ok to ndo this that is reasonably safe as i have 2 children with me? We won't be setting off until gone 7 so anywhere within 3-4 hours of Bolton would be good??? Thanks
If you can get up to near Callender i can give you a couple of places's one of which is in Callander on a car park with swings etc a few people stop on there.
3- 4 hours fom your gaff could be anywhere past Dumfries depending on speed.
At Ayr you could stop on the front.
Give me an idea of where you want to get too and i will look up where i have marked off stopping places.
also e mail me and i will send you a link to parking places i dont think i am allowed to post it on here.
Ps i live near by

Thanks for your reply, i had one of those in mind but like you say in with the trucks, i didn't know if there was somewhere along the way that you didn't have to be eating a yorkie to fit in :)
Hi Hamlton is the better of the two it has quite a big parking area if you get as far as there you will not be worried where you stop it will take aleast 4 hours and at that time of night its Services or a Laby
We stopped at the truck stop in Lockerbie last Easter and enjoyed a fabulous scottish breakfast the next morning at the cafe on site! It wasn't too busy and we slept well. Cost was £15 (i think). I had rung them before hand to check that it was ok for a caravan to use the truck stop and as it was a Friday night they said it was as it wouldn't be busy with trucks. There is a railway line running at the back of the park but it didn't afect us at all.
Hello Frit, I used to do the trip from Cheshire to the Highlands two or three times a year and stopped off at Moffat on the M74 at a hotel that hd a caravan site which was great. We would set up and have a late meal in the hotel, couple of malts, good sleep and then off in the morning. Sadly the last time I did the trip upon arriving in Moffat the hotel was closed down and I was devistated, being late at night and tired. I continued on the road looking for a decent lay by to have a sleep for a couple of hours but came upon a very ordinary economical site, pulled in and found that they hd a club so I got my malts and had a good time and a very good rest. It was not expensive and the people were great. Sadly it was some time ago and my memory is not as good as it was so I cannot give you as much info as I would like. If you look at a map for Beattock and Moffat thereis a right turn in that area and you may be able to identify the caravan site which is only 15 mins drive from what is now the moterway. Perhaps the site will be listed on U.K.Campsites but I have not looked as running out of time. Good Luck.
There is a cc-club site at Moffat which is on the right as you enter the town centre just past the woolen mill and its big car park.
Also if you carry on through the town and out on the A701 for about 10 min's there is a lay by on the right, on a bend so you can do a U turn to get back on the 74.again a very quite lay by.
Ps if you stop on the services park in the car park and NOT near the wagons as you wll get wagons coming and going all night plus the fridges running.
We regularly travel to Scotland and regularly stopped at Moffat as it took us 3 hours from Blackburn. We used to use the hotel mentioned above but this has long since been closed. However, just down the road is Craigielands we haven't stopped there for a couple of years but from the web site it looks as though it has been really revamped since we stopped. Was always plenty of space so quite often we didn't even unhitch the van. Only five minutes off the motorway. There is a handy site at the Tebay services on the M6 but this is only an hour and a half from Blackburn. There is nothing worth risking a night's stop between Hamilton and Stirling so next opportunity is a couple of sites around Alva which is East of Stirling on the A91 but this is about four hours from Blackburn. Whatever enjoy your trip.
There is also a site just off the M74 at Abington. Thats a bit further north than Moffat but not as far as Hamilton. Never visited it myself (too close to home for me) but there are 16 reviews on ukcampsite of this site - Mount View Caravan site.
There is (or was ) a site just off the M74 between Motherwell and Hamilton at Strathclyde Park. Never visited there either and its been a while since I heard anyone speak about it.
the site wee are seasonal on is only 5 mins down road from stirling services. but callender is only 1/2 hour along the road and its car park is used regularly .
Abington would suit you fine close to the motorway / quiet and safe for the kids.,Just watch out for the cattle grid just after the top of the hill after you go over the motorway, and if you use satnav it will send you down the wrong road just before the site so ignore turn left command after the cattle grid and wait till you see the site. Its called lettershaws farm I was there last week. Caravan club say it has 5 pitches but it has around 40

I was going to suggest this as a possible. We stayed there a couple of years ago. Weather was lousy but the site and the owners where nice enough. The shop/post office in the village has any bits you may need for breakfast etc. It is just off the M74 at J13. The services there(J13) are not very good for caravans by the way, very much an after thought.
