In order to have your caravan covered for breakdown you will have to be a member of RAC Arrival through C&CC or Mayday through CC. Just being a member of the AA or RAC or Green Flag (or other breakdown services) is not enough, yes these services will recover your vehicle and the van (certain van lengths and widths may not be recovered) but only if your vehicle breaks, not the caravan.

RAC Arrival looks dearer than Mayday but if you read the small print it is not a like for like cover.
Both will recover your van (any width, any length) regardless of the state of the tow car.
If you break down going on holiday both will relay you (should you take relay out, and I would say that it is advisable) to the camp site (Mayday only if you have the site booked) and then recover you home if you can't get your tow car fixed during the time you are on holiday.

We've got RAC & I've been a member for over 30 years. We're now with them & the C&CC so have arrival cover & family membership. I've only used them twice in those years but my daughter needed them on holiday last summer & the service she received was first class to say the least.

With the RAC, you are the member & will receive service in any vehicle. Lots of other groups only provide members with cover on specific vehicles. I like that about it.

I have a post going about this at the moment, were having to decide this ourselves.

We are currently with the AA and they have recovered our caravan, it's the largest single axle you can get, and we had no problems, though it took them a long time to get a flat bed to pick us up, they took us to our destination Devon, and we were only in Bristol at the time and then they took our car to an AA aproved garage in Devon for them to repair it whilst we stayed on site.  One thing with Green Flag they don't do many roadside repairs, they usually take you to the garage where the pick up has come from, as that's there way of generating income, and it's this we are wondering about, because if something can be fixed in half an hour by the roadside I would rather that than the car going to a garage, and it probably won't be fixed that day!  I wish they would state the sort of repairs Green Flag can carry out by the roadside, other than flat battery, and puncture I don't think much else.  Can anyone tell me what road side repairs have ever been carried out by Green Flag for them please. .

Well we have never been towed to the garage that the break down service has come from in our 15 plus years now with May Day but previously with another one which uses garages and probably the same call centre as Green Flag from what we understand. Previous to that we were with AA (were not towing then), the times they came out to us I vaguely remember that they only fix certain things and for other more complicated or major issues we were towed.

When un-reparable - clutch failure accident rendering car in drivable we have always been towed to the garage of our choice, and not yet to the garage that has come out to us. If you think about it they are things on modern cars that would have always been repaired at the roadside quickly an easily, but now even to access some lights the car needs to be on a ramp, and the AA / RAC can’t carry that much equipment/ parts.

Perhaps it would be interesting to see what people have had repaired by AA / RAC at the road side?

Plus I think I prefer a service that uses local businesses supporting the local economy and jobs, with potentially more experience and fully trained mechanics?

Just thought of another advantage of local garages, they often know what’s open and where locally if you need something like a tyre repair.

But as others have said and I’ve said on other threads its more important to check that they cover your caravan, some will in UK but not Europe so you may need additional cover else where.

You might well have some level of cover for your car already through your car insurance, bank account or house insurance, as it's often offered as a free bonus for customers. I've got homestart from Green Flag because of my bank account, for instance. Don't pay for what you've already got!

Green flag repaired my car at the roaside I cant remember what it was coz Im not mechanical!! LOL It was a lot more than a flat battery tho!! They also came out to sort out my campervan when it went dodgy after Vfestival and I got home ok from Staffs to Cumbria. They use local garages so get to you pretty quickly IMO. I can only go on my own experiences though!!
