went to see another van today advert said it was in perfect condition awning hardly used etc firs tto see will buy.
so we set off to the viewing full of antcipation, was this the one for us.
what a let down.the van was filthy outside(granted a wash would sort that) but inside wasnt much better and it was stinking as well.one of the cusions had a rip in it and there was a small hole in the toilet door.
the owner did say it was meant to have been washed prior to being advertised but IMO that van wasnt perfect.
and the tyres had cracks in the sidewall too which would have put me off regardless of the vans condition.
onwards and upwards we are now bidding on a van on ebay so fingers crossed

Well if that was in 'perfect' condition I wouldn't like to see a bad one! A shame you had a wasted journey, fingers crossed the one on ebay is right for you - have you been to see it?

So sorry to read of your wasted trip, shame people cant be honest!!  Have you tried Preloved - picked up a beautiful van today from thier site and only 5 miles from home.  Hopefully your next venture will prove to be much more sucessful and you can forget such a horrid experience.

It's so annoying when people aren't honest in the way they describe things.  150 wasted miles just because they couldn't describe it honestly.

Still, let's hope the one you're bidding on is the one for you.  We're only in Manchester but don't really know enough about what we're looking at to offer to go see it for you.  I'd hate to say it's OK for you to find problems later.  Would it be worth getting a local mobile engineer to give it the once over before you set off to collect it?

We had a similar thing a month or so ago. We were looking for a Crusader/Rallye and saw an advert for an Elddis Super Cyclone in Sheffield that was 2007 and 'used for less than 20 nights since new.'

We met the owner at the storage site and he took us to the van. It was a complete shed! This 'Magnificent Outfit' was dirty, again this could be sorted with a damn good clean, but who would advertise something and not present it well? The inside was not much better but the van looked every inch of being used a lot more than 20 nights! To top it all, the owner told us he had 'winterised' the van. This consisted on silver Duck tape over the tops of the locker doors to prevent water ingress, but it was too late. The doors had become wet and banana shaped (warped) and would not close properly. It also turned out that a previous owner had the van seasonally pitched at the coast. The van also had the famous Elddis Crusader cracked rear ABS top corner. Water ingress... lovely!

With the intention of helping this guy have a better chance of moving his van, I gave him some pointers like having it serviced, get a damp report and describe it more accurately and price it realistically to reflect the condition. Needless to say this van is still advertised today as magnificent and in really excellent condition, which it is not. Anyone travelling a distance to see a van that is not as described is likely to be very p***ed off, and any chance of a sale is totally zip! This guy was relying on movers and a good quality awning to clinch the sale, but at the end of the day, any resale value is in the van itself, not the accessories.

On the way home we stopped in at a dealer in Huddersfield just for a look and there on the forecourt was a superb Rallye 634 (now ours) with only one season on the clock that was just waiting for us. We went home, took some photo's of our existing van, advertised it on here and as a classified on Ebay and it went within 24 hrs. Nice photo's, honest and accurate description and realistically priced is the way to go.

Sorry you did so many miles to see a load of tripe.E bay was was good to me ,but I didn't take the first Pennine Fiesta that came along. It took over 6 months  and 4 attempts. I asked loads of questions to all the sellers, and asked for more photos.. Eventually I put in the winning bid for the final one on the understanding that if it wasn't as described and photos sent weren't accurate I would give the seller a bad feedback. He had a 100% feedback on 125 items sold,he agreed and was spot on with every bit of evidence he gave me and  very honest that was good enough for me and I was well pleased with what I'd won.On E bay, leave well alone if the feedback of the seller is a bit iffy and there is any doubt.

I was dreading this kind of scenario when we began looking for a new van' last summer. So when we pulled up outside a house in Stoke & saw the van thats now ours, & it was totally spotless I knew we were onto something. Inside it was equally the same, the oven was like new. Owners had kept it in a barn in France for previous two Winters while they were renovating a barn, so that helped.

Likewise when I sold our old one I took dozens of photos & uploaded them to my Flickr account & put the link on the Ebay ad. Chap that bought travelled 200 miles to collect & was chuffed to bits because I had been totally honest. We could have sold it a dozen times over in the end.

Hi fife-bloke, sorry to hear that your trip was waste of time, did the same a few years back, five times and round trips of over 500miles,after first wasted trip decided to view two or three vans on the route, all were the same well used and not looked after, one looked almost new in photo's in reality it was dull and faded, and three times the price it was actualy worth, top price would have been around £1200, went for £3500,and was rejected by the winning bidder as "not as described".found the van i have now by chance at knowpark caravans 1998 compass lynx 340/2 and love it,so look on bright side they are not wasted trips, they are trips that let you see what you do'nt want,so hang on in there and best of luck in you search.

I had this last year when I was looking. I live in Kent and did a round trip to Lancashire only to see a van that was less than perfect.

When I turned up, it was imediatly obvious to me that the van had been damaged and repaired, badly as well, the skin colour didnt even match. When I asked the guy, I was met with, oh, never really noticed that before. Really? Are you blind? I wasted a whole day and a tank of fuel on that round trip. I was fuming!

I learnt a decent lesson though, if it looks or sounds to good to be true, It damn well is!

Hi again

We went down to Barrons at Darlington before we bought our last caravan quite number of years ago to see what they had. We looked at a Compass 2 berth endwashroom, a little more than we wanted to spend, salesman seemed a bit annoyed as he thought he had a sale, we said we would have to come home look at the finances and see if we could afford it. I said I would phone on the Friday morning as see if they still had it, he said they did so I said we would be down first thing on the Saturday morning. We left really early, got there couldnt see it, it had been moved to the sold caravans. When we asked him he said someone had bought it that morning before we arrived, considering they had only been open about three quarters of an hour we very much doubted it, I think it had been sold during the week and he only said what he did as I am sure he thought that after coming all that distance we would buy something else, we didnt. We were glad because about two weeks later we bought our avante from Perthshire Caravans costing a lot more than we were going to spend there. For us that was a wasted journey, the same as going all that way to look at someone elses rubbish. Hang in there will be something you like and buy. I am away to ebay now for a nosey.
