yes you can but the batt will not last long as an lcd uses around 60w of power the inverters are not that efficient it will be ok for an hour or so a night but for hours on end you can end up with no power.
had the site ehu go over easter ran tv with inverter from car for few hours 2 nights taking care not to flaten car batt.

Was under the impression that the inverters would auto cut off before the battery dropped to a certain level, so a drained battery is not possible.

Which is the case of mine.

Have a look at the TV input lead and see if it has a 12v transformer on it, if it has ( quite likely ) then get a lead that has the right plug on the end and plug it directly into the TV, this is much more efficient than using an inverter.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

wasnt there a thread on here about this before advising about not using the tv on 12v like you have just suggested, Not sure but something comes to mind, I apologise if I am incorrect.

You are quite right. The current isn't steady enough to run the TV off if it actually runs of a transformer even though it says 12 volts. There are TV's that will run off 12 volts but they are expensive.

There is one here that looks reasonable

Runs on 12V, 24V, and 110V - 240V power inputs.

  • Includes a regulated 12v-24V DC power adaptor, in addition to a regulated AC power adaptor
  • Energy efficient, using only 20W of power.

This is what you need on a 12 volt TV.

I tried mine on the inverter this weekend - not ragingly successfull. Inverter started beeping after only 5 mins - seemed to pull down battery very quickly. I know other people who run TV's on inverter without any issues but theory says it is possible.

I've had varying degrees of success with an inverter. Had it flatten a leisure battery within a couple of hours sometimes, used one at easter and went right through the long weekend watching quite a lot of TV and had no problem with an 85 aH battery until it came to using the mover to hitch up and found there wasn't enough power to run it. Therer is a cut out in most inverters to avoid flattening the battery, however some of them will let the battery get pretty flat before they shut themselves off.

I always carry a spare battery, so if I flatten one it's not a big deal (though they always go flat in the night and I get woken up by the water heater buzzing)

By the way, avoid the inverters with a fan in, they use more power 9to drive the fan) and can be really noisy.

Inverters are not good at coping with capacitive loads as in flourescent lighting,I don't know about LCD TV capacitance but if it is fairly high it will easily overload the inverter.
I would be wary about running an LCD TV from a modified sine wave inverter there are lots of harmonics and spikes produced.

I use mine from the battery every time even on hook up, the cabling is neater less of them trailing all over the place.

You will flatten your battery very quickly trying to power an lcd tv from a 12v leisure battery. It will draw approx 4A constantly at 12 volts. If you then decide to use an inverter to convert 12v to 240v, you add another energy sapping device which could add an extra 1A to 1.5A to your battery load, and that drains it faster still. Inverters should only be used for short periods on low current drain devices ie phone chargers etc. ( even those should be used on a 12v plug-in supply). Digital devices, contrary to popular belief consume a large amount of power. Hope this helps
