Hi i have just been looking at some awnings and noticed that some of them attach to the van with suction cups is this secure or is it better to have an awning with the clips that go into the rail?? Does anyone have an awning like this are they ok!! I just thaught that this mite be a good option for me as a friend had same caravan as me and said that they had problems getting clips to fit their van. knowing my luck it would all come falling down around me any help welcome
By 'clips' do you mean the plastic square brackets (often known as kwik-lok pads - or is it quick-lock etc. that you get on Dorema awning, and similarly on Isabella etc), that fit on to a secondary 'beading', like that which you thread into the awning rail, but just 'shadows' the awning beading. If this is what you are refering to then I would say they are infinitely better than the rubber suction cups, IMHO. The hook of the pole fits into the hole in the centre of the quick-lok and is generally a very secure device. They look like this:
I can't understand why your friend is having problems, unless he is somehow trying to attach the pad to the beading that goes in the awning rail, rather than the secondary beading.

they are not really suction cups, well mine are not on our awning.they just sit there to prevent damage to the caravan, about three inch rubber type feet.yes they do fall and hit you on the head if you are not careful but once up they do not move. like this one
As michael says they look like, but are not, suction cups. just resting against the van with the canvas(or whatever) cover fitting into the channel in the normal way. Mine work ok. What's to work - they just sit there.
I think the main problem with the suckers occur when putting up the awning and taking it down. We had them on our old Bradcot, but just for the extra roof poles that come in between the main ones. The main poles attached to a sort of rubber tongue suspended from the roof at the caravan end, with a hole in to put the pole hook. When they broke we used suckers. I do much prefer the quik-lok pads though. They seem more secure and avaids the clonk on the head!
I've got a feeling from memory, that they used to use suckers years ago, but the roof poles went into tubes in the awning roof or some other kind of guide. The sucker was only to stop the end of the pole denting the van rather than holding anything in place. Nowadays there aren't any guides or tubes to support the poles, so I think the quicklocks are better as they do positively fix to the secondary beading.
thanks everyone going tomorrow to look at an awning the guy has it advertised as 12x6 awning whatever that means he is selling it for somebody else and dosent know anything about it so going to to have a look myself armed with a tape measure and fingers crossed its only £40
What you need to do is measure from the ground in line with the awning rail, round the rail & to the ground on the othe side of your van. this will give you the size you need.measure the full length of bead of the awning you are buying to see if its the same size

Our new awing now has the clips which go onto a rail set inside the convertor rail of the canopy & we do like this idea.
Our old Isabella had hooks on the frame & we didn't wish to drill our caravan. To get over this, I drilled holes in the bottom of the frame hole in the rubber & fitted them to the end of our frame.
Our awning on the older van had the sucker type cups sewn onto the awning beading at spaces where the rafter poles fitted. They were there to stop damage to the van walls by the poles, and the canvas kept them in place by pressure around the the other end of the poles. ???? Much like fitting cover onto a gazebo, [until you put cover on, the poles can seperate.] Hope this makes sense???

I have these for my sunncamp scenic porch awning, I got them because I was worried the poles would dent the van, really good as michael says once up they stay put :)
