Get a damp meter and check nooks and crannies with it!

I think you'd be better off buying private.

Storage - can't help with this one as we converted the front of the house to store ours.

We got a lovely van a few weeks ago for a third of the money you have so if you look carefully and think about the layout that suits you I'm sure you'll find a rose amongst any thorns!

Check out the layout you would like first

Then work out the weight you would be able to tow with your car, if you haven't towed before it would be best to keep as close to the recommended 85% of the car's kerbweight as possible.

Then go and find a van that suits armed, as Tunstallwood says, with your damp meter and check the inside of the van everywhere where there is a join or rail on the outside, prod with your fingers as well as a dry damp spot can still be soft even though it gives no reading.

You are likely to get a better bargain buying privately than from a dealer and in the long run be better off not being tied in to any dealer warranty that the dealer may come up with.

Storage varies a lot around the country prices possibly average out to around £1 a day

Good luck

I hope you don't mind me mentioning, but you need to check your license to see if you can tow a caravan without having to take an additional test, as they changed the law and I can't remember after what year.  Perhaps someone on here will know.

After 1997 it's a question of the weight you can tow I think.

Very good point

If you passed your test after 1997 then the fully loaded caravan (very often a check will be made of the plated Maximum Authorised Mass rather than weighing the caravan) must be no heavier than the kerbweight of the vehicle towing it and the total weight of the combination must not exceed 3500Kgs

Take a look on http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/caravans.html for the layouts you want, ebay is good for then seeing the photo's of your chosen 'van.  Then check the towing weight that your car can tow on http://www.whattowcar.com/ an 85% match is what you are aiming for.

Take a look around dealers but not all of them will have 'vans on sale for less than £3500. so look on autotrader, Gumtree, local freeads etc.  Look on ebay but do look at the 'van 1st before bidding.  When you've found a 'van you like then take a damp meter and check everywhere.  If you really like it then it might be worthwhile paying a mobile engineer to check it over to see if it is worth it.  A little bit like getting an HPi check on a car lol but more expensive so you'd really only want to do that if you really like the 'van.

hth and please do keep us up to date on how you get on, we're not really nosey just interested lol

Also, be prepared to travel quite a lot to view vans that turn out to be rubbish.  Not everyone is honest with their descriptions.

Have you looked at the classified ads on this site?

thanks for the replies i will get a damp meter, i dont have any worries about my licence have hgv class 1 so my licence will cover caravans, for all the (interested people) i went and had a look at a couple of dealers today and realised (when told by the wife) i need more money to keep her in the luxery she deserves but it has given me ideas of what vans to look for, the 85% towing weight is a bit confuseing though reading some of the threads it can be interpreted different ways but found a website and said my weight for my zafira is 1150 so it gives me something to go on

thanks

Got a 1989 Elddis Wisp 400-5 with all the extras (NR Pullman Awning, wastemaster, aquaroll, toilet, gas cylinder) from Ebay for £620, including documents. Side window needed replacing and some of the mastic re-sealing. As long as you are practical, you can get some very good bargains.

If you do not know what you are buying find someone who does, always view before you make a bid and if they say no damp and you find loads, report the swines. But with care you will get a good van that will last you many years.

Just remember, if it is older than yours, smaller than yours but next to yours, there is probably no credit owing on it...

Just been out in Mavis, our NR Pullman Awning looks like new, the van works well, tows well, is easy to pitch. Even for a dedicated, die hard, go under canvas man, this caravanning is dead easy to set up, quick, simple, I could get to like this...
