How scary! We had a blow out on the way back from the midlands last week. Driving along and my other half kept saying that i had packed the caravan wrong because it was unbalanced and a bit wobbly (always the womans fault!!)

Then just approaching Gordano services on the M5 and BANG! Soooo lucky, it just sounded like something had fallen off the van and didn't really know what happened. Slowed it down as luckily it didn't flip or jackknife and got out to look and the tyre had ripped to shreds.

If it had happened jusst 100 yards further down the road we would have had to change it on the hard shoulder. We were right by the off ramp and pulled slowly into Gordanos to change it.

It was more scary getting back in afterwards than when it happened because i knew what it was once we'd started driving again.

Anyone else had their tyre blow or (heaven forbid) caravan unhitch or roll etc? just wondering.

never had one but saw one at low speed once. It sounded like a gun being fired.

It must be scary at 60. How old was the tyre and was it up to pressure?

We've had one blowout on the A30 & two punctures on the M5 over the years. Lucky for me, I only drive steady when towing the van so there wasn't much to worry about.

Strange you should post this now, we were just sitting here talking about whether or not to take the trolley jack with us next week.

Thankfully we haven't had a roll over or have the van unhitch itself yet & I hope that continues.

2 for us last year, one thing that we learnt was to carry a proper trolley jack as i didnt like the way the van swayed using a scissor jack

I've had a tyre blow out on me twice on two different caravans both were easily manageable the first time I got the police out as it was on a busy dual carriageway & traffic were zooming by the police were out within minutes & the traffic soon slowed might have helped with them pointing a speed gut at them, I changed the tyre within minutes & were on our way. The second time it happened was last year on the way home from our holiday still managed to get it changed easily enough though. Both times we were doing 60mph & both times the tyres were shredded both times the tyres were under 5 years old & at the right pressure etc. It still hasn't put me off though. Can't say I've had one unhitch though.

More to the point, what caused the blowout & how can you prevent happening again? How old were your tyres. What make, what was the sidewall condition, had you checked the pressures?

We've only ever done three seasons with our tyres Tentz & changed them when getting ready to start the fourth & I don't buy rubbish tyres. I always check the pressures & tyre condition before leaving home too. What rattled me with our first one which blew the tyre out was it was on our first trip with a new van.

Its always possible you can pick up a piece of metal of summat but generally blowouts are caused by tyres that are too old, damaged or degraded, which tends to happen more with caravans because they stand for long periods of time. if the op wants to post some more details, make & age of tyres etc, it might give a clue to the cause. I remember summat about substandard tyres being fitted to Baileys a few yrs ago.

We've had two. One caused less than a mile from our storage by a smallish spike section which had fallen off a harrow and the tractor driver hadn't noticed. Narrow lane about 5mph so no bother.
The second, two vans ago was potentially worse.
Looked in mirror, mud flying off wheel ? Tread actually. Pulled into lay-by and changed the wheel.
Fortunately no damage. Reached destination and replaced all 3 tyres.

Dont suffer this, use Ultraseal in your tyres. Stops punctures, blow outs and is used by NASA and the American armed forces as well as several American police forces.

Recommended by Harley Davidson and BMW owners clubs, this stiff works! Also gives longer tyre life as well. The stuff does it's job, find out on:

we hit the curb when we were in holland a few years ago and it blew the tyre because we were on a junction we had to drive slowly to a safe parking place only a little way . then phoned for road side assistance we didnt have a jack of any sort. it ruined the alloy wheel so that need ed replacing and we missed our ferry.

we had a blow out once on a duel carrige way and other cars were flagging us to stop because we didnt know.  again we had road side assistance we didnt even have a spare tyre that time. it was an older van and we didnt have any where to carry a spare.

i think it is frightening but we never speed and have our tyres checked in fact we are very careful but these thing happen. its not always neglect

Glad everyone is Ok Weevle, and hope it doesn't put you off.

As we were leaving for the early May bank Holiday we had a wheel come off half a mile up the road - the van had been serviced by a mobile engineer 3 days before!

I am keeping my powder dry on this at the moment as it has not run the full process yet.

The van suffered quite a lot of damage to the underside as well as hub, wheel etc - not to mention the time effort and inconvenience of getting estimates.  We are already considerably out of pocket and missed 2 booked breaks.  We are just hoping the insurance and dealer can get it all sorted by our main summer hols.  Needless to say  I am not very happy.

At the end of the day, like you, no one was hurt - fortunately we were still on our housing estate where there are traffic calming measures and were travelling at less than 20mph.  I dread to think what would have happened on a faster road.  can't sat I'm looking forward to towing on a fast road - I must admit it was a bit scary towing it to the dealers, and that was after we had had a check done on it.

we had two a few years ago,on our first ever caravan we bought!! our coachman we bought from a dealer and between us buying it and then picking up a few weeks later some**** had swopped the brand new tyre for a remould!#

Well we laeft our lock up and 5 miles up road on a38 we had a blow out  lucky we were close to a lay by pulled in and the breakdown came out and put our spare on, phew all done off we go , me gripping the seat just in case!  but all was fine so i started to relax, then bang it went again right on harcombe bends near haldon hill,

OMG what a place for it to go, we called breakdown again she was so nice, and breaddown went off into exeter to get a replacement for us we had police protection ,its a good job he didnt look closely at the tyre, he did check the van over though, his car nearly got hit as they come up the hill so fast, replacement on and we crawled to the top and breakdown had a look at the tyre and found it was a remould, we were fuming, and got the dealer we bought the van off a few months earlier to reimburse  us which they duly did.

But that experience left us not relaxing when towing for quite a few more trips,, its not nice thank god its not happened again but i sympathise with anyone thats had a blow our.

My pal had a blow out on a dual carriageway doing 50 mph., it completely wrecked the  shower room and wardrobe of his Abbey Stafford. The RAC came and changed his wheel and they looked at the tyre which had blown and told him it may have looked in good condition before he left home but it was 12 year old the same as the other 2 tyres he had ,and the spare, even though it had never been used, was out of date.
