I posted asking how to get rid of them a couple of weeks ago . the only thing that seemed to be available was thetford tank cleaner about £6 a bottle.
well I've now got rid of them .
I didn't use the thetford tank cleaner, which doesnt actually say its for the top flush tank anyway, it says its for cleaning and freshening the waste tank and cleaning grey water tanks too, and for flushing drainage pipes out .
Got me thinking theres a household cleaner for all that, and it must be safe to use on plastic water pipes.
So I bought a packet of soda crystals in wilkinsons, used about half a pack, dissolved first and poured in the flushtank. filled up and left it an hour or so.
Result ! flushed it all through , it removed all the yukky bits and I now have a nice clean tank with no bits.
cost £1.20 , thetford tank cleaner £6.00.
And I've now got blue diamond pink and blue chemicals instead of the thetford pink, which is what causes the bits in the first place, also cost a lot less than the thetford ones.
I got a litre of each, double concentrated,for £12 for the 2.

well done.i use milton (safe for babies bottles) as advised by a friend who got the information from thetford at a show.good business though, sell you a bottle that makes black bits and then sell you one to get rid of them.

Two good tips. We haven't had any black bits yet in our latest caravan, but have bought some of Jackson's own brand top and bottom tank. Will give it a go and see if it's any better than the Thetford stuff.

Most supermarkets do their own brand of liquid steraliser which works out much cheaper than Milton and does the same job.

ok, ditch the thetford pink and blue and get asda / tesco milton type stuff and move forward. We have the black bits in the flush water this year for the first time. It looks so awful and have flushed and flushed and flushed but still there.
Where do you get the blue diamond chems so cheaply ?????

A couple of years back we were on a site where the normal "thetford" chemicals were not allowed and we had to use Fenwick's Top & Tail.
Since changing over to using that, we have had no more problems.
The loo chemicals no longer "go off" after a few days and we do not get any either black bits or pink bits as we did before with the thetford stuff.
Also we find it easier to store just one bottle.

Its very satisfying flushing all the black bits away isnt it!
We've used Elsan and Blue Diamond, and also OneChem, without any problems. Not tried the Fenwicks Top and Tail, but having converted OH to Fenwicks Caravan Cleaner Im sure we will.

Getting rid of problems is usually the easy part. Stopping them from returning is usually a bit more difficult (and costly).

Hmmm dont think the comment about Thetford Pink causes it...I have been using the Thetford Pink for 8 years spread between the two caravans that I have had so far and use 12 months of the year. I must say I have never experienced these 'black bits' some people say they have had. I must admit I always put a stronger solution in than it says on the bottle.

I don't think the Thetford Pink causes "black bits". I do however think that it causes Pink Bits.
These are solidified bits of the Pink Solution that also form strings which clog the slide on the bowl and are a sod to get off.
