We drove to Losehill cc site in Castleton today and followed AA directions. We ended up towing the van down Winnats Pass. I hadn't heard of it before but certainly don't want to tow the van on it again.
If we went back over the Snake Pass, would this be an easier way to tow the van?
I certainly wouldn't want to tow down (or up) Winnants Pass! Love doing it in the car though! We've never used Snake Pass when towing but use it regularly in the car. In my opinion, iIts not a good road for towing, there are many windy stretches that have a bad 'camber' (don't know if that is the right word!) but i wouldn't fancy it with the 'van. I have ever seen caravans or HGVs using it. We use the A628 (Woodhead Road) when towing.
Lucky you though staying at Losehill, i love Castleton, Edale etc. Beautiful area, have a good time. Bad weather day today though but hopefully better after today.

Years ago went down the one at the bottom of Winnats Pass (can't remember the name), its the one that uses a boat i think. That was really good. More recently took the kids to Treak Cliff Cavern which was also good. I think the one at bottom of Winnats in called Speedwell Cavern. Is Loosehill a good site, did you get any road noise? We probably shan't ever use it though as its very close to home! Hope the weather isn't too bad today!
Perhaps better to go back through Hope, then through Bradwell and then up to the A 623, turn right and it takes you back to Sparrowpit which is where I assume you turned off to drop down Winnats.
Losehill is a lovely site and have had no problem with road noise, but we are not on a pitch near to the road.
Thanks Tony we will try that way on the way home.

Out of interest why are you not following the Caravan Club directions?
I didn't use them because they don't give diretions for people coming from the West, only from the M1. So we just printed the aa ones. There is a message about the pass, but as we didn't print off their instructions we had thought this might only affect people coming from the M1.
I was driving but I would like to think that if I was sat in the passenger seat we would have acoided it. There again if hindsight were foresight...............

We came home today via Hope and Bradwell as suggested above.
I noticed outside Speedwell cavern that you could smell the hot brakes of the cars coming down. Our van is very light - less than 50% of the weight of the car and we went down in second gear. I notice it is used by smaller buses and vans. I suppose they must be below the 7.5 tonne limit.
All familiar territory Winnats is one road other than Sutton Bank I'd certainly never wish to tow over legal or not! However, I've done the Snake towing many times and find it perfectly acceptable from a towing point of view. Woodhead is full of Polish Sat Nav driven juggernauts going full pelt and the M62 is full of everything else!
Sparrowpit is a perfectly acceptable route albeit with a tight(ish) turn near the Buxton end.
It's true enough about Losehill, lovely site but the front part is a bit blighted with road noise the back (other side of shower block) is fine though.
