Hi All

Having recently  bought a late 80's Fleetwood 5 berth caravan, I am impressed that all electrics work and fridge and heater, but when I tried to get the hob working the grill seems to be good but both gas rings light and then blow themselves out after some 30 - 40 seconds. Any help would be appreciated or should I get a gas engineer to have a look??

Do you suggest a specialist caravan gas guy or will any engineer be able to help ?????

I have a feeling that your gas lines might be partially blocked either by oil or rust debris or you may not have cleared air from the system.

I would err on the side of caution with gas and have the gas appliances serviced by a qualified mobile engineer.

Is the regulator good. Is the gas bottle nearly empty. If it was really cold it could be because butane gas stops gassing when its cold. Was it butane

If you bought the caravan privately I would take it have it serviced, then all the gas and the electrics will be checked and you will get a certificate to say they have been checked. The same applies to the brakes and other bits that usualy get neglected. I know that some insurance companies won't pay out if the vans hasn't been regulary serviced by a certified person or dealer. It makes for greater peace of mind also.

My parents found out to great cost that just because it works doesn't mean its safe.

If it has removable burner heads, ie they lift off, as our Crystal's did, check all the holes/slots in them are clean. Also, if they do lift off, make sure there is no dirt or grease in the bit they fit in. Even a bit of water in the holes can cause the flame to lift off, as the better half proved every time she cleaned the hob. If however that doesn't work, as others have said, get someone qualified to have a look at it.

       Pete.
