You could wash it (or scrub it with soapy water) and then re-proof it using Nikwax or similar.
But before that, try baking soda. Put the awning flat on the ground outside, sprinkle the baking soda over it, bundle the awning up and scrunch it up into a ball. Let it sit for a few hours. Then open the awning up and shake the baking soda off.
Test the baking soda on a concealed area to make sure the fabric isn't faded by it.
