After my recent illness(es)I have been longing to get back outside in the great countryside we have, so imagine what a predicament I am in now.

DH hates camping in a tent. DS and I love it. DS does not get many weekends free to go for 2-3 days and has to book holiday to make sure he gets 3 days in a row.

We have a Vermont L, Trailer and Landy Disco. DH is obviously insured on Disco but its just astronomical to put DS on too, even tho he drives it around the farm and manouvers it better than me with the trailer on for all its requirements down there. DH could share driving but hates camping, so imagine my predicament.

Until today when we have been offered a very reasonably priced 2 berth caravan!! Wow DH said I would go in that and we could have weekends together when DS is not able to!
DS said I would not mind that we could leave it set up and ready to "hitch and go" and we would be able to go further on the 2 days I get reasonalby often from work. And if Dad wanted to go too I could use the Pop up in the awning!!

Now please tell me what do I need to get this all in place. I dont know the first thing about owning a caravan, insurance, maintenance etc. Obviously I can tow a large trailer for all the camping stuff. We have nothing equipment wise in the car due to taking the dogs with us (they object to the draughty trailer LOL)

Many thanks

Karen

Your advice would be greatly appreciated - But to me at the moment seems I win both ways if I had a Tent and Caravan.

Did you pass your test before 1997? if not as the Disco has a GVW of 2.7tonnes the caravan will need to be quite light otherwise you will go over 3.5tonnes gross. To drive that requires a further test if you passed you driving test after '97.

Insurance is not compulsory for a caravan but advisable. No probs there. If caravan is old & cheap premium should be well under £100p.a. Maintainance, if you can't do it yourself, a caravan workshop or a mobile fitter that comes to you will fully service 'van for about £150, only required every 2yrs.

Thanks Tentz

Yes passed my driving test well long ago!! Pre 1985 infact. Towed trailers for a long while now.

It was the maintenance side I was worried about. So a caravan has a sort of MOT every 2 years - right. Insurance I will look into. One of the ladies down at our stables has a son that does her maintenance on her caravan so, if its that straight forward, perhaps if we see him right !! he will look occasionally at this one (hmm)
I suppose its just like making sure the trailer is roadworthy, tyres, load distribution etc.

Thanks

Karen

No your caravan does not need a MOT every two years (YET) but it may be worth you getting a service every two years

Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
