On our recent trip to France, our pitch had a waste drain which we didn't use because we didn't know it was going to be there, so we had no pipe (all the pitches had them, no extra cost).
However, this wasn't exactly a drain but a plastic pipe which stuck vertically out of the ground by about 2 feet. If I did try to use it, the pipe would have been above the level of the drain point on my van, which suggests I would have had the waste water sitting in the pipe almost back to the sinks etc. With the heat we had, I dread to think what the smell would have been like...
Is this normal for waste drains elsewhere (never used one before)? We're going back to France for 2 weeks in August (different site) and I was planning on using the drain then, so I'm hoping that either it is a ground-level drain or I've missed something in the way you use them?

unless the top of the drain was level with the floor of the van or lower it would be of no use.as water does not run uphill and could run back into your shower cubical drain and flood the floor of it if the pipes were on the same drain.another reason for making sure the caravan is level from side to side if the pipes run across the width of it.

I've never seen this. The usual type I've seen in France has a slightly raised base and holes in the sides where you put your pipes - just above ground level. I've hadt these even on €12 per night
I have come across a similar idea in Spain, it was a 50mm pipe that stuck up the air for about 100mm. What you are supposed to do with that I don't know.

Our tourer days are over and we have moved on to a Hobby Motorhome
Unfortunately, I didn't think to look into this further before we left...every pitch had 2 of these pipes, so they must have been waste drains, no? And almost all of them were damaged in some way, I assumed by vans being reversed into them...
No-one on the pitches around us were using theirs...maybe it was just some sort of vent system? Seems unlikely on every pitch...
Very weird...

I came across this for the first time over Witsun at Chateau Galinee in Brittany. The draiage was a 6 inch pipe sticking out of the ground by 3-4 inches no use whatsoever.
Some of the pitches had had the pipe broken so that it was at ground level but I'm used to emptying the waste so I didn't use ours
If they are pround of the ground by only a few inches then are they not below your outlet pipe height? Depending on where they are positioned you could either use your normal connector over them or a short flexible hose.
Last year there was one of these pipes on our pitch but the stench coming from it was horrendous. I ended up putting a carrier bag over it and sealing it with loads of sellotape. It turned out it went into the main sewer where all the contents of the toilet block and chemical disposal went and then under our pitch. Yuk!!
It is very possible that the pipe sticking 2ft out of the ground could of been a breather pipe for the drain system. Bit like a crude septic tank system. This is why other post put a bag over it, its like the stench pipe on your house. Just maybe, somewhere near was an actual inlet at G/L. Why each pitch would need one, I'm unsure!
Actually, we did cover one of ours (the other was too badly broken) but the pitch right behind us also had 2 and I couldn't do theirs as well...we could smell them although it wasn't too strong...
Hope it's different in August...

I assume that it was at La Croix du Vieux Pont? If so I am pretty sure they are vents, which as you say are often covered! When we were there last year there were some green plastic drain covers at ground level which we fed our waste hose into.

Ahh, maybe - as I said, we weren't trying to use them so I didn't look (or ask) for any other drain. But why so many vents - 2 on every pitch?

The waste was at the front of the pitch shared by your neighbour, so although it is lower than your outlet it is 20ft away and as has been said before water will not go run uphill without a pump.
Didn't spot it was uphill. I keep a 6m length of flexible hose in front locker and some smaller peices to use on pitches with a drain, depending on distance, never had one uphill though.
