I've had exactly the same thing happen while on site, fortunately at Bardsea Leisure where there's also a pretty good accessory shop.
On the parts documents, have a look at item 26A, Pump Retainer (go to spare parts and open required parts list from there). These are held on by three small hook-clips at the base and are prone to breaking, therefore all siphoned water is under zero resistance in the base of the pump.
Easy to fix, part (if it is this that's broken) will be about £8.
To access pump, prize out the cover beneath the handle. This will seem stuck as it has some mastic on the underside plus a few clips. Once off, remove the screws that are now visible and the whole pump assembly will simply withdraw from the tank.
Re-fitting is the reverse, but tease the mastic back into place (or replace) and clip the cover back into situ.
