I have one of these MULTI-PURPOSE SAFETY FITTING on our 6kg bottle it has a reset button one it and fits directly to the bottle before the regulator, my understanding is that the above problem would not have leaked all the gas out as the cut out would have operated.

This looks a good idea. So, when you say, '...fits directly to the bottle before the regulator', would it be appropriate to substitute 'pigtail' for 'regulator'?
I too have just looked at this fitting, it seems an ideal solution and from what I see it would have shut my propane gas cylinder down as soon as the pigtail came off.

Can someone put up a pic of a gas pigtail? I think mine just attaches straight from the regulator to the gas imput hose.
My 'van is pretty old, and the gas bottle is next to the leisure battery in the caravan boot! ULP{!!! Just off to check whether there are any gas vents at the bottom of the boot....
later... no there isn't any. Just ordered a couple of vent covers and will go and drill the holes when they arrive...

I would not worry too much if your regulator and pipe are in good condition. The problem seems to be with the bulk head fitted regulator that just has a pigtail connector on the gas bottle fitted to new vans.
I would not be a happy bunny if this had happened to us with a new van.

I have ordered one of these and it arrived today. One problem though: The one I recieved did not have a manual reset button but was packaged correctly with correct instructions. It seems there may have had the wrong valves packed by thier suppliers. BES are on to it.
So if you have ordered one please make sure it does have a reset button as if not it will not have the safety cut off feature

I have just changed my van to one with a pigtail connection, any idea what make yours was as I have mine new and ready to fit for next week.
I would hate to think of anything happening while we are away.
I am sorry but I do not know what make it was. The dealer replaced it with a more robust one. Hopefully it was just a one off and a 'friday afternoon' error.

If there was no fire ,why was the fire engine on site , and who alerted them , some thing does not seem right to me
Fire brigade would be called as a safety precaution - same as they would for a petrol leak

Kent Fire & Rescue were called quite correctly by the warden of the C&CC Site, I would have expected nothing less. There was a significant danger posed to other people at the time, if the gas had ignited the caravan could have exploded taking out the surrounding caravans, children and adults.
Surely you can understand why this was necessary!!!!!
