Hi you lovely people

We're off to Woodhill Park on Thursday ( 8 families from  my sons class at school to celebrate his birthday) and wondering what the best way to go is. Still new to vanning so still nervy about the towing aspect!

Should we go A52 then A17 to kings lynn OR someone else suggested that going down the A1 to peterborough and back up was a better route.

I do wish that the AA route finder had a "with caravan " option!!

Have a look at this they have a caravan option.
The A17 is full of lorries and caravans at this time of year but the A1/A47 can be murder as well. Have a great time here in Norfolk

Did this exact same trip from SW Notts in June! I thought A52 - A17 but SatNav chose A1. We don't tow a caravan but I can't remember there being any stretch where you would struggle.

OH only been passed test 2 years and with a fully laden car, got the gearing wrong coming off a round about going into the slightest of inclines. Apart from the embaressment of stuggling to get up to 40 whilst everyone else over took at 70 (dual carriage way) the trip was without incident.

There were plenty of caravans on site at Woodhill, some of them must have come from Notts so you should expect a more experienced answer soon.

Id be interested to know as well - travelling down from Yorkshire to Incleboro Fields next month. AA routeplanner is generally good, but doesnt always give best route (has suggested a tortuous route through Bradford, Leeds & Huddersfield for us to get onto A1 whereas we know Otley/Tadcaster would be straight across and less traffic for us).

Has suggested we come off A1 at Sleaford and across to A17, would we be better staying on til Peterborough too?

I have done both routes with the caravan and there is very little to choose between them. It is nearly all single carriagway once you have left the A1.

If you choose the A52 route, this tales you through a one way system in Grantham which can be a bit tight.

Better to stay on the A1 South until the next exit to Grantham. Leave ther and prepare to turn right within 1 mile, signposted Boston, This misses out the town centre.

Hope this helps

A1 to Peterbro, then A47 all the way down to Norfolk, we always go via the A6006 via Melton Mobrey to get onto the A1, but thats because were in north Derbyshire, and approach via the A38/M1.

There have been a lot of good road improvements and by-passes built along the A47 over the last couple of years, and its now a much better route than it used to be.

A word of warning regarding using the A47 Mc Donalds services en route whilst hitched up, they are not very caravan friendly, and if you get stuck into the carpark, they are so narrow and congested that its difficult to turn around without de-hitching and turning car and caravan separately. The only other way out is through the drive-through, but again restricted due to very narrow lanes and sharp turns.

There are however a number of good lay-byes along the way, often with a refreshments van/burger bar parked up and open for business, which offer good value.
