No idea for route advice, but I just have to say you HAVE to have some honey ice-cream from the Hive on the Quay at Aberaeron - to die for! We've had a summer break of various lengths not far from Aberaeron (inland a bit, at Rayader - sorry for the spelling, Welsh people - please forgive me) for the last 5 years or so (hoping to get this year too, but my Dad is ill, so we don't know yet whether we'll manage it) and wouldn't miss the ice-cream for the world! Have a fantastic time.
* check all the roads to make surethey are OK for towing the van.
Sorry to hijack this thread - but how do you check whether the roads are OK for towing? I am also off to Wales and and a little nervous about which route to pick.
Thanks SusieSu

Most often by doing as ashwellgirl did and asking on here - there is at least one review of the site you are going to at Barmouth here so someone has traveled that way before and should be able to advise you.
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
Cant say about first part of route, but we use the A44 from worcester, via Kington, Rhayadar, Aberystwyth to Aberaeron 4 or 5 times a year, and its a nice run even with the van on, and yes the honey ice cream from the harbour is the best.
T1gerJack Thanks for that. We'll definetely be using the A44 we are still working out the best way of getting accross the country to there. We don't have much luck on the M6 as we always just sit there for hours so want to avoid that lol.
Just a thought, You could go, M25, M40 and get off at Warwick A46 via Stratford and A422 to Worcester.
Hope you have a lovely time there, we love the area around there, if you visit Cradigan theres a lovely old fashioned sweet shop called Yum Yum, takes us back to our childhood, was spoilt for choice ended up spending far to much, all that sugar, no wonder we were buzzing for a fortnight
We would go that way but they are doing roadworks on the Hatfield tunnel and we didn't like it the last time that we towed :( So we are thinking of going up and over from where we live but just can't see a nice direct route as all motorways seem to go up and not over lol.

Just plan your route well Susie and I'm sure you'll be fine. [Burntwood - do you know Ian & Esther? We met them at Half Term at Freshwater.]
Cannock
A460 to J1 M54 then A5 to Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury by pass to A458 to Welshpool
A458 west to Llanfair Caereinion and onwards
A470 to Dolgellau
A496 to Barmouth.
Hi David - I haven't met Ian and Ester but have chatted to them on here - I know we're from the same 'neck of the woods' and I believe I'm near to them at the Pillaton meet in September. Small world isn't it ! ha ha
and Hi LlaniDavis - thanks for your route - much appreciated.
