Hi Wendy - glad you enjoyed your first trip we have just made the same transition from tent to caravan and are really thrilled with everything. To be honest I saw far less use of windbreaks amongst caravanners when we were away last week compared to tents. I found most people would just sit outside of their awnings without, but when we were away in the tent we used to create a bit of a private area with a couple of windbreaks to give the kids a bit of space to play outside within sight and also when cooking on the stove to stop burners blowing out. I think though it could well differ from site to site

We've just bought a windbreak, but only because we've also bought a cadac and sometimes you need the shelter from a windbreak to cook behind. Otherwise we dont bother. We have a porch awning, but if the weather permits I do prefer to sit outside. You cant admire the view behind a windbreak.
Like miss baritone we do it to create an enclosure for the dogs. However we only use a 3ft high wind break so we can sit outside and see and be seen by passers by who want to chat. I said that once we had our van we would become less sociable but it really has'nt made much difference to us.

Lots of people use them to contain small children and dogs within a boundary, which I can understand completely. Others seem to like to have a privacy 'fence' all around their pitch just to stake out their territory - LOL!
I must admit to making the assumption that people using windbreaks would rather keep themselves to themselves. So, if you want passers-by to stop and chat to you, windbreaks might be putting them off. If it drives you mad if anyone steps onto your pitch, then get a load of windbreaks!
If you go caravanning in France, individual pitches usually have shrubs or hedges all around them anyway, doing away with the need to put up a fence. France is a big country though and space is not so much of an issue there. Here, hedges would reduce the numbers of pitches you could squeeze in.
Traditional wooden pole windbreaks are also rather heavy kit to carry if you don't absolutely need one. Personally, we wouldn't want to be loading the extra weight and I don't like anything that can get blown adrift in high winds - it keeps me awake at night worrying.
At mo I have to cook outside so a windbreak is essential. Looking for a lighterweight one with thinner poles as the monster one I was given is huge/heavy/bulky/ takes up half my van space. If I had a bigger campervan Id probably go without but need the space/privacy outside so a windbreak is essential.
our wind breaks are alittle compound for our dog to walk in and so she has a boundry, otherwise she thinks she owns the site, also a place she cam do her business and can be cleaned up easy without anyone standong in it.
we took one this trip and did the 1/2 moon arouns the front end of the van but to be honist other than hanging a little ruddish bag of it we didnt fined it any use as i like to watch people and its hard behined a plastic screan lol

This just reminded me of a tip which really works - if you have hedges bordering your pitch particularly in France or Italy where mossies are a problem, pitch nearer to one side of hedging and line the hedge with windbreaks - cuts down the number of midge bites considerably (French local told me this and my OH who gets eaten alive was down to just the odd bite last year).

Our GSD is a bit gobby so when people walk by she does tend to let them know she is there so the wind-break is ideal so she doesnt see them plus I appreciate that not everyone likes large dogs.
We put one up to, er, break the wind... It creates shelter, outside the awning. Also, provides a method of putting up a parasol for Mrs Viggo, who burns even under a full moon.

we have used them for years to make a compound for the dogs to lie in and chill out.we used to use the forestry commision sites but they have new rules now.only one winbreak per pitch, max of six poles. i think that is the influence of the c&c club who now help run the sites.if anyone knows of any decent sites that allow windbreaks and have long walks for the dogs let me know.perran sands is great but they charge £3 a night for each dog.
