We travel with the blinds and curtains open. Our blinds have that silver foil type effect on the outside which I suppose is to reflect heat back out to keep the van cool, or some function like that. The down side of that is the sun can reflect off it and dazzle other drivers as I have been driving towards vans in that configuration myself and found it dangerous.
Blinds up for various reasons, for us we get a degree of being able to see through the car's rear view mirror and caravan back window, especially at night when anything following is shining its lights through them, although we do have good vision down the sides of the caravan through the side mirrors also, it just adds another bit of a feeling of security.
Next reason is that if you tow with them down, and one of the blinds catches fails, they can flirt up and retract within the casette bit at the top causing damage that is rather expensive to repair.
Final reason is as above, the silver reflective backing can dazzle other drivers if the bright sunshine is shining on it.

Always with the blinds up. Not only will they probably damage the small springs but they can dazzle other drivers, as stated above, if the sun hits the window. Also enable other drivers to see through the van and I can also see down the van if something comes adrift.
I only use the blinds at night and the curtains are only shut when the van's at home.
I always have the curtains open when I'm travelling, but that's probably as much because I open them to pack the van and don't close them as anything else.

Its not so much that we need to hide anything, but we do store our van with the blinds closed to help stop the upholstry from being damaged by strong sunlight that can easily fade and weaken the fabrics, and cause some types of laminate to become brittle. whilst curtains may suffer a similar fate if left drawn for long periods of time, at least they are far more simple to replace than a full set of upholstry or fixed furnishings.

Ive just realised, Ive never used the curtains! Always use the blinds. Van is stored at home with the blinds down, this is because we have a sort of terracotta upholstery and the sun would fade it. we used to travel with blinds down as well, but we dont now because of the reflection to other drivers.
Dealer told me not to leave blinds down, but I reckon it would be cheaper to fix one of them than re-upholster the van!
Hi, We travel with the blinds up as well, our curtains are for effect only so they dont meet if we close them ! , Thats how they were when we bought the van so we only use the blinds at night or if its really sunny during the day and we want to keep it a bit cooler inside.

It is not a good idea to keep the blinds down as this will eventually weaken the return springs on them giving you expensive repairs to have done.
Always best to use throws on your upholstery to stop them fading.
No laminate should become brittle in strong sunlight, it is after all a type of GRP (without the glass fibres of course) and GRP boats sit in strong sunlight 24/7/365!

We were also advised of the danger of detensioning the springs if you leave the blinds down too long so we made a set of curtains out of blackout curtain lining for use when the van is in storage. We didn't want to leave the blinds down and risk stretching the springs. These curtains are on wires and held with hooks and eyes. We also have a seperate piece of material that we cover the area where sunlight gets to from the rooflight. On site we just put up the ones on the windows beside the beds, takes about 30 seconds and keeps out all the light including the bit that gets in under the blind. . No spring damage and no reupholstering.
I've never used the curtains either! Never even tried to close them now I come to think about it. We always travel with the blinds up but store with them down so the upholstery doesn't fade.
