Hi
Heres the plan pull out the front bed and put some plastic sheeting on it and store two mountain bikes on it and do the same for the back of the van, that will be four full size MTB's in total the rest of the bits in the middle of the van to even the weight out.

If this doesnt work i will make the boys ride their bikes to Scotland

Next plan is the porch an porchlite xl it comes with two stability straps is this enough?

How does the porch fit to the van?

Instead of buying some skirt can i use the plastic sheeting?

How does the skirt fit to the van if i have to buy some?
The porch is 275cm long so does the skirt have to be 275 or would 3 mtrs be better?

The nose weight for the car is 100 KG

Thank you

PS we will be at new england bay week comencing 16th aug can some one show us how on earth you put this porch up pretty please

Have you enough payload free to account for 4 mountain bikes?

And loading fore and aft is not the best idea.

Better plan would be to put them on the roof of the car.

You really can't put bikes at the front and back.  You need to concentrate the weight towards the middle to reduce pendulum effect.

Also, as Jennifer says, it's unlikely you will have enough payload for 4 bikes and an awning in the caravan.

The skirt slides through the rail, it has beading the same as awning edge. 3m will be better I think, it might be included with the awning though?

Thanks for the replies
The Payload is 275KG the bikes weight 60KG and the porch is 10KG.
I just though it would be easier to put the bikes on the bed i will be checking the nose weight.
We havent had time to organise how to store the MTB's really and no spare cash for roof bars etc
The two vents for the fridge and cooker will be inside the porch is this okay?
How does the porch attach to the van?
The skirt will have to go over the wheel and back in to the awning channel so we will get 3 mtrs.
I will check the porch for the skirt as it has been in the box it was delivered in for a year untouched.
Thanks Again

70kg out of a payload of 275 is a fair chunk. Have you already taken account of the gas bottle(s), battery and other essentials? Or does the payload have to cover them too? Which van do you have?

I think you need to check out a few things. Is this your first trip?

The awning slides into the awning rail at the edge of the roof. The skirt into the rail at the bottom. It goes straight across the wheel arch, but 3m is an ok length.

Having the fridge vents inside an awning is quite normal.

Will 30 kg at each end of a 1200kg+ (just a guess) van really make any difference? I'm no physicist but it seems unlikely...I have 30kg of awning on the floor at the rear of my van (noseweight issues) and I've never noticed any instability.

Any heavy items should be stored over the caravans axel or very slightly behind it, and as low down to the floor as possible, to pack a caravan with extra weight to the rear can create a pendalum effect, a serious factor in inducing a dangerous Snaking movement to develop whilst towing, which is very frightening indeed and can result in a serious accident and possible flip over of the caravan onto its side .

Likewise puting too much down weight on the tow hitch and drawbar can cause the cars rear suspension to sag, resulting in a lifting of traction off the cars front wheels, which can effect steering performance and any Abs braking type systems the car may have fitted.

This is just not worth the risk, and for safety's sake wouldnt it just be easier to hire some bikes locally from where you will be staying, rather than risk the dangers to your family from a badly loaded and probably illegal van outfit?

Hi thanks for the replies time to rethink on where to put the bikes.

I can assure everyone the van will NOT be overloaded or loaded in an unsafe way

everything put in the van is weighed before hand i just thought it would be nice to take the bikles this year as we bought light weight bikes so they could go with us this year.

Thanks again

Weight at the ends is unsafe.  You may get away with it, but it's reducing your margins.

You could buy a "carabike". We have one and it is brilliant - the bikes then stand up in the main gangway over the axle. Perhaps two in the van and two on the car?
